The note that made me think, “I can’t beat this!”
It’s been a few weeks since I started on note.
I spend my days reading the fascinating notes written by other users, nodding along, grinning, groaning, or suddenly feeling something hit me right in the heart.
Among them, there are creators who make me feel, “Their talent is terrifying…!” and I just can’t take my eyes off them.
Today, I want to introduce one of the creators I’m keeping an eye on, “Komugiko Name-taro”-san.
If you’ve never read Name-taro-san’s notes, please, start by reading this one.
See? Isn’t it incredibly interesting?
It’s tacky to explain it, but since I’m a bit frustrated, let me talk about the three things that make Name-taro-san so amazing in my opinion.
1. The structure is too good
If you look at the structure of the note I just mentioned, it goes:
Bento (micro)
Local area (medium)
Media (macro)
Back to self (micro)
It’s a zoom-in/zoom-out structure.
And it ends softly with “greeting a tanuki.”
The “design” is so good, it’s almost annoying.
The way the scale is designed—Bento to local to media to self—is distinct. It feels comfortable to read.
I heard Name-taro-san works in mechanical design, and that makes perfect sense.
2. The precision of the metaphors is abnormally high
“The soil is visible in the pretense of Tokyo”
“A parfait where even the cornflakes look like the main character”
“Real Donkey Kong”
The back-and-forth between the concrete and the abstract is incredibly skillful.
Moreover, they hit that “off-kilter but makes perfect sense”line every single time. I can’t help but grin while reading.
3. The perspective is “one step back”
The note I introduced isn’t just a story about a local area; it includes:
・The “fear of TV editing a town”
・A meta-perspective of “a land that doesn’t fit into categories”
・And finally, wrapping it up by saying “I’m on the same side of this eccentric behavior”
They are always “looking down from above, including themselves.”
That brings an indescribable, somewhat surreal sense of humor to the entire piece.
Every time I read a new post from Name-taro-san, I get the urge to shout, “
No way! I can’t beat this!” Not that I’m doing note to beat anyone, though.I just read it, feeling impressed and thinking, “Wow.”
(The contents of their multinational bento alone show they aren’t just an ordinary person. And the fact that the reason for it is a focus on workability, versatility, and reproducibility is just too funny.)
It wouldn’t be strange if they published a book someday.
Since they seem like they’ll really go far soon, I’ll just keep reading on my own and feeling frustrated on my own for now.
