Behind the Multilingual Observations | After Walking Through the "Language of Space"
*This article is a behind-the-scenes look at the observations after the conclusion of the "Language of Space" series.
As I continued writing the "Language of Space" series, I realized it had a quiet depth I hadn't anticipated.
Above and below, inside and outside, distance, perspective, corners and edges...
Even though these are words we encounter every day, when compared, I found that each language places its "center of gravity" in the world slightly differently.
For the first entry, "Above and Below," I was honestly hesitant.
I wondered if it was okay for someone who isn't a linguistics expert to step into such fundamental territory.
However, as I lined up these small discrepancies, the shape of the world beyond the language began to emerge, just a little. I think that feeling is what kept me from stopping.
What was difficult were words that exist between a place and a feeling, like "inside" or "corners and edges."
Even though it's not clear exactly where they are, you can definitely feel that they are "there."
Every time I dealt with such ambiguous words, I felt as though I were gently touching the values embedded deep within each language. And I was also made aware of the values I hold myself.
When choosing images, I prioritized the "atmosphere of that entry" over literal meaning.
It felt as if the contours of those words within me were being refined little by little through the photos I selected.
Looking back, perhaps I wasn't just observing space, but walking around the question of "where am I standing?" the entire time.
And then I realized.
That a "sense of movement" was always lurking within the language of space.
Front and back imply a direction of travel, distance implies the relationship of approaching and receding, and corners imply the potential to turn.
So next, I think I will look at the small "orientations" before space begins to move.
Between direction and movement. I will continue to place those slight fluctuations alongside the language.
