[Creative Short Story] The Best Seat Above the Clouds and the Guide of the Flying Whale
Good evening! This is LaLaLa, currently in the midst of trial and error.
This time, I have spun a little story inspired by a single beautiful fantasy illustration.
A sea of white clouds stretching on forever. A castle with a blue roof floating above it, and sailing ships crossing the sky.
This is a story about a girl and her little companion living in such a mysterious world.
Why not leave your daily life behind for a moment and go on a journey through the sky?

📖 Story: 'The Best Seat Above the Clouds'
'Hey, Toto. Which country does today's wind smell like?'
With her white hair fluttering in the wind, Ruri sat on the edge of an old stone observatory.
Beside her, as she swung her legs back and forth, the mechanical bird 'Toto' tilted its head with a clicking sound.
'Beep... The scent of the orange orchard on the eastern floating island. The scheduled sailing ship will soon break through the clouds and arrive here.'
The place where Ruri lives is the ceiling of the world, commonly known as the 'Cloud Sea City of Rium.'
The ground is on the other side of thick clouds, and all that exists here is an endless blue sky, floating islands, and sky ships connecting them.
From her best seat, Ruri can see many sights again today.
On her left, she can see the historic 'Main Castle of the Sky' with its many spires.
On her right, the port where adventurers gather and large cranes are moving busily.
'I think I'll go to a distant town today.'
The moment Ruri whispered that, the clouds beneath her feet rippled greatly.
Splash—.
What appeared, kicking up not water but 'cloud spray,' was not a ship.
It was a giant 'flying whale' swimming gracefully through the sea of clouds. On its back, an entire old town was perched.
As the whale passed in front of Ruri, it let out a gentle, low, rumbling sound like a deep vibration. It was as if it were greeting Ruri in her best seat.
'Hehe, have a safe trip!'
Ruri waved with a beaming smile at the receding whale town.
The world is vast, and there are still many floating islands she doesn't know about.
'Toto, let's ride on that whale's back tomorrow and go to a new island.'
'Understood, Ruri. Let's start preparing our luggage for tomorrow's good sailing weather.'
As the sunset began to dye the sea of clouds orange, the girl and the little bird began to plan the new adventure that would start tomorrow.
📖 Story: 'The Whale's Back and the Lost Guide'
The next morning. The sea of clouds was a milky color, wrapped in the morning mist.
As promised, Ruri headed to the regular port for the 'flying whale' she had seen yesterday.
It was a special boarding day, which only happens a few times a year, to cross over to 'Neto Island,' a town built on the back of a giant beast.
'Ruri, it is three minutes before the scheduled time. Please check your ticket.'
Toto urged her from atop her shoulder, flapping its wings.
'It's okay, I have it right here!'
What she pulled out of her leather sacoche was a whale-shaped coin made of brass. When she inserted it into the ticket gate machine, the clouds in front of her parted smoothly, revealing a long wooden gangway leading to the whale's fin.
Stepping onto the whale's back, she found herself in another world.
Brick houses that exuded history lined the streets, and the narrow alleys were filled with the scent of spices and freshly baked bread. Every time the whale slowly flicked its tail, the entire town swayed comfortably like a cradle.
'This is amazing, Toto! All the buildings are designed with whale bones and scales!'
Just as she turned the corner of an alley in excitement, Ruri nearly bumped into a boy.
The boy was about the same age as Ruri, wearing large goggles on his head, and was holding his head while spreading out a torn map.
'Whoa, sorry! ...Wait, are you someone who came from Rium (the island where Ruri lives)?'
'Oh, yeah, I am... is something wrong?'
The boy's name was Kir. He was a rookie 'Sea of Clouds Navigator' living in this whale town.
'Actually, the old navigation chart for getting to the next destination, the 'Floating Island of Megaliths,' got torn... If things go on like this, the whale will plunge into the cloud turbulence (storm). You should have been able to see the latest cloud currents from the Rium observatory, do you remember anything!?'
At Kir's desperate gaze, Ruri was startled.
The memory of the scenery she had been watching from that special seat yesterday came back vividly in her mind.
'...I remember! Yesterday evening, from the direction of the eastern orchard, there were beautiful streaks of clouds with a blue glow stretching out. Toto, do we have a record of that data?'
'Beep! Airflow data, verification complete. The safe route to avoid the turbulence is fifteen degrees northeast from the current course!'
Toto's eyes shone like a small projector, casting the correct route in blue onto the torn map.
'Wow...! This will work!'
Kir's face lit up, and he grabbed Ruri's hand.
'Come with me to the bridge! We need your eyes!'
And so, Ruri and Toto, who were just tourists, ended up steering toward the violently swirling sea of clouds as "temporary guides" to save the city of whales.
📖 Story: "The Blue Light That Tears Through the Storm, and a New Front-Row Seat"
"Everyone, hold onto something! An impact is coming!"
Kir's shout echoed through the wheelhouse.
Ahead, a vortex of pitch-black storm clouds loomed like a giant wall. Eerie purple lightning flashed, and the whale's massive body shook violently up and down.
"Toto, what's the next course!?"
Ruri shouted while clinging desperately to the railing.
"Visibility is poor! A strong headwind is blowing from the center of the storm. At this rate, the whale's fins won't hold!"
Toto's warning alarm blared intensely.
Beyond the glass window was darkness where one couldn't see an inch ahead. Just as everyone was about to stop in their tracks out of fear, the scenery Ruri had seen from that "front-row seat" flashed back into her mind.
(Back then, there was something I saw for just a moment through a gap in the storm clouds—)
"Kir, to the right of those black clouds! Deep inside the thickest-looking cloud, there should be an 'eye' where the winds cancel each other out. Punch through there!"
"Wait, you want me to dive into the biggest cloud!? ...Alright, I trust my partner (the whale). Ruri, I trust your eyes!"
Kir turned the giant helm with all his might. The whale twisted its body and dove headfirst into the pitch-black cloud Ruri had pointed to.
Violent vibrations. The sound of wood creaking. Amidst a roar that felt like the world was falling apart, Ruri kept her eyes open and stared ahead.
And then, the next moment—.
With a soft sound, everything went silent.
Dazzling golden light poured into the wheelhouse.
It was an incredibly quiet and beautiful "void in the clouds," surrounded by a wall of storms. Below them, a "floating island of giant stones" stood silently, bathed in light.
"...We made it through."
Kir muttered, collapsing onto the floor.
The whale sounded a happy, clear "Booooo!"—even louder than the day before. It was as if it were thanking the small guides who had led it.
A few days later.
Ruri was back at the usual Rium observatory.
"Beep. Ruri, a 'private sailboat' that is not a scheduled flight is approaching from the eastern sky."
Looking up, she saw Kir waving his familiar goggles high in the air.
"Ruri! We're going to survey a new route! Come with me!"
Ruri looked at Toto beside her, and they nodded with the biggest smiles.
Her favorite front-row seat isn't just here anymore. From now on, that entire vast sky will be their front-row seat.
(The End)
💬 Final Thoughts (Conclusion)
This concludes the three-part series, "The Front-Row Seat Above the Clouds and the Flying Whale Guide"!
Did you enjoy the adventure of Ruri and Toto that started from a single image?
I tried to depict a girl who used to just gaze at the scenery, now leaping into a new world with her own memories as her weapon.
I hope this served as inspiration for your own note writing or just a little break.
Thank you for reading until the end!
