"When was it?" - "Sunset Sunrise" | 2025: Film Record vol.225
I thought it would be a laid-back slow life, but...
The way it incorporated the background of teleworking during the COVID-19 pandemic, the setting of the Tohoku region, and social issues like depopulation made it a film that didn't get too serious but still left a lasting impression.
However, I thought it had a great balance, being full of humor as well.
Personally, the etude with the Gachi-Tako and the scene where Takehara Pistol shows a smile he's been holding back were incredibly funny! While it didn't go as far as the 'custom-bound village' trope synonymous with mockumentary horror, the closed society of the village functioned well as a comedic element.
And all of this is thanks to Nishio-kun's character.
Even when he was told at the izakaya, 'That's why you Tokyo folks are...', the way Nishio-kun showed a delighted expression in response (wondering what kind of food would come out) was wonderful, and I thought it was a way of living I'd like to emulate.
Also, it made me cry for the first time in a while.
I had some thoughts while watching a film that has heavy themes like the Great East Japan Earthquake and other disasters at its core. Even this word 'heavy'—I feel like I've built a wall somewhere inside myself, treating it as 'someone else's problem,' and that has been bothering me.
I felt saved by those words from Ken-san, who spoke in response to Nishio-kun, who passionately said, 'You just have to watch' and 'I just wanted to be born in this town.'
Takehara Pistol's gentle, conversational acting also had that human touch, or perhaps 'nin' (natural charisma), that he shows in his music, and tears just came to my eyes.
As an aside,
Come to think of it, it was Imoni-kai (taro potato party)two days in a row.
So, that was "Sunset Sunrise".
Today is a double feature!! I have also posted a review article for "We're Young! The Movie: International," which was also written by Kankuro Kudo, so please check that out as well m(_ _)m
Thank you for reading until the end!
