How to Gain Trust
Among the things a store manager must do to manage a store and increase sales, the most important thing is to make the store a place where staff find it easy to work. (I have turned the work of a store manager into a series and included it in a magazine, so please take a look at that as well.)
If you can do that, sales will increase on their own.
This is because all the staff will work hard for you.
To achieve that, you must first be trusted by your staff.
I have also written an article about one of the keys to successful customer service: gaining trust from customers.
Here, I listed four points: 1. Be honest and do not tell lies. 2. Interact with a smile. 3. Handle products with care. 4. Move briskly.
In my previous article, "Leadership Tips," I wrote that to move people, it is important to first be trusted by them.
So, how can you gain the trust of your store staff?
Basically, it is exactly the same, but let's look at it in more specific detail.
<Being Sincere>
Being sincere—this fundamental principle is exactly the same. Not lying or hiding things, and being straightforward and transparent brings a sense of security to the staff.
Isn't this the most important thing to be respected as a human being, even before being a boss?
As with everything, it starts with showing sincerity from your side, by
recognizing your subordinates' strengths and respecting them. "Give and Take" also starts with "Give." Do not be a "Taker," but a "Giver."A "Giver" is not just about self-sacrifice without expecting anything in return, but doing things within your own capabilities that you also find enjoyable.
"Giving is the greatest joy. Those who bring joy to others will find their own joy and satisfaction through it."
<Keeping Promises>
Indecisiveness is no good. You must be able to clearly say what you cannot do.
It is important to strictly keep your promises, even for small things.
<Walking the Talk>
Take responsibility for what you say and see it through to the end.
If what you say and what you do are different, you will lose trust.
<Understanding the Other Person>
First, by knowing and understanding the other person, you can get them to open their heart.
Also, silence during a conversation has meaning. If you observe carefully, you can see the other person's true feelings.
<Listening>
When talking, it is easier for the other person to accept you if you sit diagonally in front of them or to the side, rather than directly opposite.
If there is personal information in their consultation, you must absolutely keep it secret. If you don't, they won't confide in you and will never talk to you again.
During the conversation, it is important to match the other person with gestures and nodding.
It is also good to summarize and repeat back the content of what they said.
Never criticize during a conversation.
When asking questions, do not ask in a way that can be answered with Yes or No; ask in a way that requires them to respond with words. This is the same as interview questions.
(Please see the next article for how to conduct interviews.)
<Always Having a Positive Attitude>
You must not make negative remarks, make excuses, or complain in front of your subordinates.
Always think about moving forward and take action.
Life can only be understood by looking backward, but it must be lived looking forward.
If you do not always move forward, you will stop there, and regression will begin.
<Don't Forget Gratitude>
It is important to have the honesty to admit your mistakes and apologize when you are wrong. You must also not forget to express appreciation to others on a regular basis. The importance of
gratitude is discussed in the following article.
<Eliminate Stress>
In order to listen to and accept what your subordinates have to say, you must have space in your own 'vessel' to take it in. If your heart is full of stress and worries, there is no room for others to enter. You should try to eliminate such stress and worries on a daily basis, and even if they remain, you should temporarily forget them and change your mood when interacting with others.
I am also struggling with how to eliminate stress, so I would like to address that on another occasion.
<How to Regain Lost Trust>
Trust is hard to build, but it can be lost in an instant. Rebuilding lost trust may be even harder than building it from scratch. It means executing what I have described so far without letting your guard down. However, no matter how careful you are, trust can sometimes be blown away by a sudden event. In such cases, you should
carefully analyze
the situation to understand why it happened, honestly admit it if the cause lies with you, listen to the accounts of all parties involved, and apologize. After that, you must take action in a visible way to change your behavior and meet the expectations of the other party.
A relationship of trust does not end once it is built. It must be maintained into the future. It must be evolved into something even stronger. People's hearts are fickle. You must also
constantly evolve
more than the other person, or you will be left behind.
As I always say, no matter how old you get, you are always learning.
