Learning English words is easier and faster when you understand them instead of memorizing them
When I was a student, I didn't really use English vocabulary books.
This is because I was not good at rote memorization of words.
I also thought it was a waste of time to make small flashcards.
What I used to make were English notebooks.
I would write down entire sentences that I didn't understand in them.
I would write the meanings of unknown words, how they connected, and the meaning of the entire sentence.
Naturally, since the focus is on the meaning of words, vocabulary books might seem more compact and better, but the way they enter your mind is completely different.
Just staring at words only makes you sleepy and nothing sticks in your head.
I think this is because my brain is of the understanding type rather than the memorization type.
I have written an article about the memorization type and the understanding type, so please take a look here.
Practical English learning methods for after you become a working adult are in the next article.
Also, although it is more of a trivia topic, I plan to introduce the rules of English word pronunciation in the next article.
The title is planned to be "Rules of English word pronunciation that schools don't teach you."
And today's theme is an English vocabulary learning method where you understand instead of memorizing. Even for English learning methods, I recommend understanding rather than rote memorization.
I will introduce six tips for that this time.
1. Increase your opportunities to come into contact with English.
2. Try saying them out loud.
3. Try writing them down on paper.
4. Try using apps or games.
5. Break down words and understand their combinations.
6. Learn the etymology of words.
Now, I will talk about them in order.
1. Coming into contact with English is not limited to textbooks.
Reading English books in genres you are interested in,
listening to English music in genres you like,
watching your favorite movies, dramas, or YouTube videos with subtitles instead of dubbing,
listening to English podcasts,
or watching overseas news in English,
there are actually quite a few ways.If you expose yourself to English even a little bit every day,it becomes auditory learning and enters your mind.
As I wrote in the previous article, 2. saying them out loud and 3. writing them on paper are far more effective than just looking at them and reading them.
Just staring at them can lead to thinking you understand when you actually don't.
Also, by doing so, you might make new discoveries.
Please,try outputting them.
4. Recently, it seems you can also learn with apps and games. I don't use them at all, though.
5 and 6 are finally the main part of today.
5. Words have prefixes and suffixes.
6. Some words share a common etymology.
If you can identify these, you can guess the meaning to some extent.
I have summarized an example in a table to introduce it to you.
<Prefixes>
They indicate meaning by being attached to the beginning of a word.

<Suffixes>
Some are attached not to the beginning, but to the end of a word.

<Etymology>
English, which has roots in Latin and Greek, contains words that share common etymologies and meanings.

By grouping words with common meanings in this way, the number of words you need to memorize will decrease significantly, and you will be able to guess the meaning of new words to some extent, making them easier to retain and making English learning easier and more enjoyable.
Why not give it a try?

Thank you for reading today as well.
I would be very happy if you could like and follow.
I look forward to your continued support.
