09. The One Who Shapes Things in the Forest | Atsuko

─ The Forest Tailor ─

On the east side of the forest, a little way from the lake, stands a single, slender, towering tree.
There is a round window halfway up the trunk, colorful fabrics swaying from the branches, and a small door at the roots.

That is the home of Atsuko, the forest tailor.
Basking in the morning light, Atsuko sweeps the ground. A few fabric scraps from what she finished last night still remain on the cobblestones in front of the door.

Inside, the shelves along the wall are neatly lined with fabric, thread, and metal fittings that Hayato brings back from who knows where.

Atsuko lightly pinches a metal fitting with her fingers and narrows her eyes.

"This is still a bit difficult for the forest children to handle... but if I change how it's used, it could become a light and sturdy fastener."

"Hayato's love for exploration is actually quite useful."

She murmurs to herself and starts the sewing machine.

Her movements are quiet and efficient.

Riding the morning breeze, Moko appeared with a soft flutter.
"Atsuko, I heard you're going to town, Moko."

"Yes, today is supply day. The town market only opens once a week, you know."

She checks the fastener on her bag and closes the door.

It is a lightweight bag made for the forest, fitted with sturdy hardware that can also be used in town. That combination is the very essence of Atsuko's work.

She is a craftsperson who travels between the forest and the town, loosely connecting the two worlds.

As she begins to walk, the edges of the fabric swaying in the light flutter smoothly, as if cutting through the forest air.

"I'll buy some sweet bread on my way back. Moko, share some with Hayato and Mei, too."

"Yay, Moko!"

Beyond the voice echoing deep into the forest,
Atsuko stepped onto the path leading to town.
