Emology 3: The Mind That Wouldn’t Stop, The Night Without Sleep

☕ Office Scene

“Nako, are you feeling tired?”
Anna Murata peered across the desk, concern in her eyes.
It had been a month since Anna became Nako’s manager —
and the more Anna tried to be kind, the tighter Nako’s chest felt.

“I’m fine,” Nako said quietly, eyes down.
But she wasn’t fine — not even a little.

She had stayed until 10 p.m. the night before, finalizing a presentation.
When she opened the shared folder in the morning,
the layout had been changed.
No comments. No notes.
Just silent corrections.

Segawa, her former boss, had been different.

“Nako, why did you write it this way?”
“Ah, I see. Let’s tweak this phrasing a bit — just to avoid confusion, yeah?”
He had been someone who spoke to her.

Because she had once known a world where feedback didn’t mean rejection,
this new, wordless world hurt even more.

Maybe I’m not needed anymore…

She buried that thought deep inside,
and once again stayed past office hours, staring into the glow of her screen.

🌙 Sleepless Night

Nako jolted awake.
The clock read 3:07 a.m.

“Only two hours of sleep… I have work early…”

She closed her eyes, but sleep refused to come.
Thoughts spun endlessly:

“That report must’ve been wrong.”
“Murata probably thinks I’m useless.”
“Why can’t I ever get things right?”

The same words circled, over and over.

When the alarm rang,
she pressed her face into the pillow and shut it off.

Another night she couldn’t tell if she had slept or not.
Another day began.

Her reflection showed dark shadows under her eyes.
A quick touch of concealer, a faint smile in the mirror.

“You can do this, Nako. Just one more day.”

The smile looked practiced — and painfully fragile.

🕯️ Quiet Collapse

“Nako? You’re still not done?”
Her colleague Mizuki’s cheerful voice pulled her back to reality.

Half her work was still untouched.

“Need help with the data?” Mizuki offered, sitting beside her.
“No, I’m fine. Thank you,” Nako whispered.

Mizuki laughed softly.

“Come on, don’t be shy! I’ll help!”

Kind, bright, effortlessly competent —
qualities Nako used to admire now scratched at her nerves.

Just… leave me alone.

“Anna was really worried about you,” Mizuki said, typing away.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard —
a task that had taken Nako hours was finished in minutes.

“Done! I sent it to your chat. Let’s go home!”

“Something that takes her ten minutes takes me hours…”
Nako muttered under her breath.

“Nako, are you okay?”

Mizuki’s hand landed gently on her shoulder.
The warmth reached her skin — and Nako began to cry.

Mizuki wrapped her arms around her, rubbing her back.

“Hey, it’s okay. Don’t cry, Nako.”

For the first time in weeks,
Nako allowed herself to cry — and couldn’t stop.

🫧 The Tears That Wouldn’t Stop

Even after leaving the office, even at home, the tears kept coming.
Mizuki offered, “Come stay over,”
but it was a weekday — Nako didn’t want to be a burden.

The next day, she took her first sick day.

“I lied… said I had a fever.”
The guilt pressed down on her chest until it hurt.

She spent the entire day motionless,
in the silence of her apartment —
a hollow outline of herself.

When she returned the following morning, eyes swollen,
a senior manager stopped her.

“Nako, maybe you should take some time off.”

No one had said she was unnecessary.
But somehow, she believed it.
Maybe it wasn’t the world —
maybe it was her own voice saying it.

And so, Nako began a two-week leave of absence.

🌅 The Morning After

Light filtered through the gap in her curtains.
It was the brightest — and the sharpest — she had ever seen.

But this quiet time marked the beginning
of two weeks that would change her life —
a time to finally face herself.

🇯🇵 Cultural Notes

1. “No comments, just corrections” – reflects Japan’s tacit communication culture, where silence often implies criticism or disapproval.
2. “Two-week leave of absence” – in Japanese workplaces, taking mental-health leave (kyūka) can carry stigma, so doing so represents a major emotional turning point.
3. “Concealer and smile” – part of tatemae, or the social expectation to appear composed even when struggling inside.
