What is a "TOB"? A takeover notice received by a single-share shareholder and a story about making about 1,000 yen
The first time I saw the term "TOB" was in that envelope. I didn't even know how to read it.
Even if you only own one share, you still receive an envelope.
I'm going to tell you the story of how a 40-something on an allowance unexpectedly received a "takeover notice."
An era where you can become a shareholder with just one share
There is a way to buy shares called fractional shares.
Depending on the brokerage, you can buy from a single share, and for a few hundred to a few thousand yen, you can become a shareholder of that company.
A small amount of money that is all my own, separate from the household budget.
For me, living on an allowance, this was one of the few "areas I could control myself."
I wrote about how I created this capital in a previous article.

The envelope arrived
One day, an envelope arrived with a company name I recognized written on it.
I opened it while feeling my wife's gaze, and there were words I didn't know lined up.
"TOB," "Stock Exchange," "Squeeze-out"
Even though it was Japanese, I didn't understand the meaning (^_^;)
As I read on, it seemed that "another company had come to buy this company."
That was the only thing I understood.
But I had no idea what would happen after that.
Will it be delisted?
What will happen to the shares?
Can I even sell them in the first place?
For now, I just checked the stock price
While my head was in a state of confusion, I decided to just check the current stock price.
To my surprise, it was about 1.8 times the purchase price.
It was only later that I learned that stock prices can move when takeover news comes out. At the time, I just thought, "Oh, it's up."
I don't know what will happen in the future. I don't understand the complicated stuff either.
If that's the case, I'll sell. Even if it's just one share.
Result: A profit of a little over 1,000 yen
It's not a big deal. But I bought it based on my own judgment, sold it based on my own judgment, and ended up with a profit.
Just that alone made me feel a warm sense of happiness.
My wife asked me, "What was in the envelope?"
"A notice from the company."
I answered. I wasn't lying.
Even if you don't understand, it's fine to take action
I understand TOBs and squeeze-outs a little better now.
But at first, I didn't understand them at all.
Without understanding, I decided to "just sell it for now," and the result was a profit.
Honestly, I don't know if it was the right answer.
But I believe there was meaning in the fact that I was able to take action.
You don't need to understand everything before starting a side hustle or investing. You just need to start small and learn little by little.
Here is a more in-depth practical record.
