2025/09/08 Making Small Steps Visible: Our Family's Allowance Rules
2025/09/08
Just when the sky cleared up, the clouds thickened in the afternoon. That's how the day began.
I decided to take the day off work due to a recurring bout of feeling unwell, and took a deep breath in the quiet living room.
“I won't push myself today!”Because I had made that decision, a sense of relief outweighed any guilt.
However, for children, the concept of “just resting” is quite difficult.
My second daughter, who was supposed to spend the day relaxing by my side, was feeling completely better and seemed a bit bored.
Even so, she was kind enough to tuck a blanket around me to look after my health and kept me company while I read.
She is so sweet.
The Start of the 10,000 Yen Challenge!
It all started with a desperate plea from my eldest daughter when she got home from after-school care:“I want to earn 10,000 yen before our next trip!”Actually, the day before, on our way back from a recital, she had spent her allowance lavishly at the shopping mall.
On Obun-san goods, her favorite character.
There was about a month left until the trip. Her usual allowance and help around the house would never add up to 10,000 yen.
So, I introduced a point-based allowance system.
◉ 100 yen for completing all 5 daily essential habits (practice for lessons, homework/home study, going to bed by 9 PM, etc.)
◉ 20 yen per task for 11 basic chores
◉ 50 yen for ad-hoc requests
◉ 100 yen bonus for perfect scores on color tests or passing piano practice pieces
A
sense of securitythat you will definitely get it if you do the work. Theexcitementof seeing it grow the more you take initiative, and thespecial rewardthat comes from hard work. The reason I created this system was so that the children could happily realize the value of their daily efforts.
Surely, this is something I feel myself every day as well.
It is only with a stable foundation that the desire to take on new challenges is born. For a third grader, 10,000 yen is surely a big dream.Small steps lead to the big sum of 10,000 yen.
Small efforts accumulate into a great sense of achievement. Being able to experience that process with my children is a joy as a parent.
Ways to “Visualize” Effort
Instead of just handing it over, I decided tovisualize progress with stamps.I made a chart of each chore and decided to use a stamp in the color of the person who did it.
Then, we check the total together.
The colors that gradually increase serve as proof of their effort and give them the feeling of getting closer to their goal... or so I hope.
The day before the trip, we plan to look back on our achievements as a family and rejoice by saying,
“We made it this far!”I hope that sharing the process of reaching the goal will work even better than the money itself.
Small Steps Toward the Future
An allowance is not just a reward, but one of the realizations gained through daily life and learning.
“Effort will always take shape.”This experience will surely nurture the children's self-esteem.
How do you make your children's hard work visible in your home?
By making invisible efforts “visible,” you might be able to nurture strengths that neither children nor adults even notice.

Both were important proofs of the children's growth.

Thank you so much for reading until the end!
I am always grateful for your warm likes and comments.
By creating a system where we can acknowledge each other's small efforts,
I'm sure warm discoveries will be born!
In the process of walking toward our goals,
I hope our family bonds will deepen even further.
Without pushing too hard, little by little.
Let's continue making small efforts again tomorrow.
See you again!
