The morning air was cool, and the breeze coming through the window felt pleasant. No air conditioning needed.

6:30 AM.
The morning in my hometown began with the cheerful voices of children.

“Grandma! Good morning!”
“Good morning to you too, great-grandmas! Goo-ood mor-ning!”

A refreshing awakening, showing no signs of fatigue from yesterday's travel.

In the morning, they did coloring and made bead stickers, and at lunch, they stuffed themselves with my mother's homemade fried rice; my daughters have already melted into the rhythm of my hometown.

In the afternoon, they looked at things my mother had made and chose what they wanted to create themselves.

My second daughter tried making a wreath. It was heartwarming to see her little hands working so hard to put the materials together.

Repeated questions and unchanging smiles

Interacting with their great-grandmothers is a precious experience that is hard to come by in our usual environment.

Because they are hard of hearing, my daughters seemed a little confused about having to speak in loud voices.

But they tried their best to raise their voices, and no matter how many times they were asked the same thing, they answered with a smile.

“How old are you now?”“Six years old!”
“You’ve grown so big, are you in elementary school?”“Still in preschool!”

Watching that, an indescribable warmth spread through my chest.

They showed their finished work to their great-grandmothers, too.
Even when asked the same questions again, they answered with a smile.

For children, “repetition” is never a bother, but ratherthe very essence of communication with their elders.

Their purity teaches me, an adult, a lesson.

The feelings behind the words

My father has difficulty speaking due to the effects of a cerebral infarction.
But in front of his grandchildren, he tries so hard to speak.

When talking with my mother,“It’s good rehabilitation,”is a phrase that comes up naturally.

It seems that in his usual conversations with my mother, he often just says “yeah,” but it’s different when his grandchildren are involved.

I feel a quiet strength in my father, who continues his walking routine even after our family dog passed away.

There must be so many unspoken feelings, too.

But his very presence will surely become a precious memory for the children.

Healthy and happy, that is all

Hearing that the great-grandmothers will be at day service tomorrow, I feel relieved knowing my mother will have some time away from caregiving.

She handles work, housework, and caregiving all by herself.

Even so, I admire how my mother enjoys her handiwork—weaving, embroidery, knitting, and playing the Taisho koto.

Right now, she is trying to make knitted stuffed animals to fulfill each of her grandchildren's requests, and she seems to be into rice bran pickling. I honestly respect her; her vitality is amazing!

Each family member has their own time and role.
Rather than forcing themselves to carry the burden, everyone naturally supports each other as the days go by.

My wish is truly simple.
I just want them to stay healthy, happy, and enjoy their lives.
That is all I wish for from the bottom of my heart.

The time spent as a family across generations is filled with a warmth that words cannot fully express.

From the smiles of the children answering the same questions over and over,I feel I have learned that “love resides in repetition.”When was the last time a moment with your family left a lasting impression on you?
