Short Short: Aitaina (I Want to See You Greens)
"Look at this. This year's one is so magnificent."
On the smartphone screen, Grandma held up a Chinese cabbage like a trophy.
"That's great," I heard my brother's voice as he filmed.
"Grandma's cabbage is delicious, after all."
When I said that, a beaming smile spread across Grandma's face.
"Delicious doesn't even begin to cover it. Whether you pickle it or put it in a hot pot, it's so sweet it'll make your cheeks drop off."
"She's saying 'come and eat it'."
My brother whispered so Grandma wouldn't hear. Grandma, born in the Showa era, is not good at expressing her true feelings. When she gets lonely, she starts bragging about the vegetables in her field.
"I suppose this is 'Aitaina' (I want to see you greens)."
My brother sent me a text later.
"Did you get home safely?"
After returning from my trip home, I got another video call from Grandma. Snow was falling on the usual field. "It's cold, it's cold," I heard my brother's voice from off-screen.
"It's the first snow. I've got radishes planted. They'll be delicious."
Grandma was waving happily.
"Okay!"
I waved back. Next time, it will surely be 'Mata kite ne' (Come again, root).
Short Short No. 747
I am participating in Tarahakani's weekly short short note.
This week's theme is "Aitaina" (I want to see you greens).
Last week's secret theme was "Mojimoji Company." Even while the cat person is slacking off, the stylish and pop Hisui-san is writing!
My policy is to push through with momentum!
Hey. Long time no see. I've come again.
