Now is the Time for Facilitation!
There is a teacher at my school who is struggling with classroom management.
They don't feel the current state of the class is very good.
How should they go about classroom guidance?
I cannot write the details, but they have concerns roughly like these.
So, we consulted together and mapped out this story.
1. Carefully write down the current state of the class as seen by the homeroom teacher in the class newsletter.
2. Read the newsletter aloud during the end-of-day meeting.
3. Pose the question, "What do you think about this?"
4. Provide an opportunity to hear the students' voices during the next day's homeroom period.
From here, we will apply Whiteboard Meeting® skills to proceed as follows:
(1) How do you perceive and think about the current situation of the class and lessons? (Divergence)
(2) Share what is going well and what is causing trouble (Convergence)
(3) Share what the class should do and how they want to be (Application)
* Write these on the blackboard to visualize the opinions (Divergence: white chalk) (Convergence: red chalk) (Application: yellow chalk)
By carefully writing down the children's opinions on the blackboard, it is important to convey that everyone's opinions are treated with equal importance as well.
Also, by visualizing the opinions, it prevents arguments from becoming abstract and makes it easier to reach a consensus.
In the application phase, conclude the meeting by setting priorities and assigning roles.
Finally, at the end of the time, have them write down their reflections on how they felt throughout the meeting.
In the class newsletter, including a photo of this blackboard along with the reflections will provide an opportunity for continued thinking.
Furthermore, after school that day, hold a strategy meeting with all the teachers involved with that class.
The flow is almost the same as with the children.
5. Strategy meeting by involved teachers
(1) How do you perceive and think about the current situation of the class and lessons? (Divergence)
(2) Share what is going well and what is causing trouble (Convergence)
(3) What should be done about the lessons, what can be done, and role assignments (Application)
* Write these on the whiteboard to visualize the opinions (Divergence: black) (Convergence: red) (Application: blue)
Here, the visualized opinions of the children can also be used as reference material.
I have had many dialogues with the homeroom teacher about the flow up to this point and have built a strategy.
This is the teacher's full-scale facilitation debut.
I would like to watch over them closely and support them.
Yes. This is also a test of my own facilitation.
Good luck! Teacher XX!

Thank you for reading until the end.
I also write about various other topics under the theme of Education x XX.
I would be happy if you read them.
