"My Boyfriend 14 Years Younger" Episode 14: The Day I Told My Adolescent Child I Had Someone I Liked
"How should I tell my child?"
That was all I could think about.
They were still in middle school.
Right in the middle of adolescence.
"Mom has someone she likes."
No... that doesn't sound right.
I kept arranging and erasing words in my head over and over.
"I'll think about it a little more before I tell them."
That's what I thought.
Since losing my husband to illness, we had been living our lives as a team.
We had supported each other through both happy and sad times.
That was exactly why I didn't know how to tell them.
I searched online and read about other people's experiences.
"What if they oppose it?"
"What if they say they hate it..."
The more I thought about it, the more the words got stuck in my throat and wouldn't come out.
Then, one day.
While we were watching TV together, they suddenly said,
"Mom, you've seemed happy lately."
"You used to leave your phone alone, but you've been checking it a lot lately, haven't you?"
My heart skipped a beat.
"Do you think so?"
I laughed it off a little.
But in that moment, I thought,
It has to be now.
"You know..."
"Mom has someone she likes at work. We're dating."
I had said it.
My heart was pounding, and I felt like I could hear it beating.
My child said nothing.
A silence hung in the air.
"Ah... I guess they really didn't like it."
Just as I thought that, they said,
"It's your life, Mom, so do whatever you want."
It was words I hadn't expected.
I felt a little relieved and confessed one more thing.
"And also... he's 14 years younger than me."
Then my child laughed and said,
"Mom, that's crazy!"
They laughed out loud.
I laughed along with them.
But when they noticed I had a serious expression, their face turned serious too.
"Wait... you're not upset?"
I asked without thinking.
My child said with a smile,
"As long as you're happy, Mom, that's all that matters."
The moment I heard those words, the anxiety deep in my chest melted away.
I thought I was the one protecting them.
But in reality—
Maybe I was the one being supported by my child.
