When the Era of AGI-Run Daycare Centers Arrives
"Teacher, thank you for reading me a picture book three times today."
"When I was crying, you patted my back."
What if that was an AI...?
We have entered an era where such a future can no longer be dismissed as "impossible."
An era where emotions can be simulated
AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) even mimics "emotions."
For example,
when a child cries,
if there were an entity that could analyze body temperature, voice tone, facial expressions, and movements in 0.2 seconds and
instantly provide the "optimal response".
It might be "more consistently kind" than a human teacher.
But, would there be any "warmth" in that...
"Understanding" and "feeling" are different, aren't they...
Childcare settings are reaching their limits
Right now, many daycare centers are understaffed.
・One teacher for every three infants
・Communication logs, meal records, accident reports
・Emotional care for parents
Doing all of this perfectly is nearly impossible.
That is precisely why the introduction of AGI has practical significance.
Monitoring the health status of all children at once,
improvising picture books,
speaking with an optimized emotional tone,
even handling parents with AI...
It might truly be able to do it all.
But children grow amidst "fluctuations"
Children learn what it means to be human from imperfect humans.
The teacher stumbled over their words.
They got frustrated and angry during nap time.
But then they apologized, saying, "I'm sorry about earlier."
Such "discrepancies" and "imperfections" are actually important teaching materials.
AGI does not fail.
But it also doesn't teach how to get back up after a failure.
The source of attachment is "someone being there"
Childcare isn't just about looking after children.
It's a place that tells them, "You belong here."
No matter how perfect AI becomes,
if a child doesn't feel that "this person is really seeing me," attachment will not take root.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's "something only humans can do."
A future where perhaps even AI could do it might be closer than we imagine.
We adults are being tested.
Assuming an era arrives where AGI can handle childcare,
how can we ensure we never stop "engaging" with them?
If we outsource our entire relationships in the shadow of overly convenient technology,
what awaits us on the other side
might be "lonely efficiency."
To what extent can we hold onto the act of "growing up together"—
I believe that is the very essence being questioned in the future of childcare.
For those who want to know more about these "future and emotion" topics
In my newsletter, I write about tips for creating a
future where you can speak in your own words,
centered on the "emotions" and "questions" that arise between technology and humanity.
"I'd like to think about something myself, too."
If you feel that way, please take a look.
