👆 Introduction
When you open an overseas webpage, you don't always want to translate the entire page into Japanese.
You might understand the headings well enough. Looking at the photos and diagrams gives you a rough idea of the topic. But there is one word you don't understand. You just want to check a short note. You got stuck on a single sentence near a button.
In such cases, it feels like overkill to translate the entire page and switch the display.
On the other hand, if you copy the word you're curious about and move to a different translation screen, you lose your place. It feels like your reading flow is interrupted just for a short question.
This time, we will try out Immersive Translate's "Text Selection Translation" and "Mouse Hover Translation."
Furthermore, we will touch upon "Blur Translation," which allows you to read the original text first and check the translation only when necessary, as well as the feature to translate text by selecting an area within an image.
Instead of translating the whole page, can we create small entry points for the parts we don't understand?
We will look at that using an English verification page I prepared myself.

▶ You can also check how to use Immersive Translate's mouse hover translation in the official guide.
🧭 What we will look at this time
We will try the following four features this time.
"Text Selection Translation" to check words or sentences on a webpage by dragging over them
"Mouse Hover Translation" to check by hovering your mouse over a paragraph
"Blur Translation" to read the original text first and check the translation only when necessary
"Image Area Selection Translation" to enclose text within an image
The names are a bit similar, but the targets are different.
Text selection translation targets text that can be dragged on a web page. Image area selection translation targets text within images or screenshots that cannot normally be selected.
This time, I didn't use third-party articles for screenshots, but instead checked the operations on an English page where I created both the text and the layout myself.

This is not a page for evaluating English itself. It is a small experimental ground for seeing the differences in translation entry points and displays near words, sentences, paragraphs, and links.
🌐 Immersive Translate What is it?
Immersive Translate is a translation tool that can be used when reading foreign language content such as web pages, PDFs, video subtitles, and images.
When used as a browser extension, you can display the original and translated text side-by-side or translate only the necessary parts without leaving the page you are currently viewing.
In previous installments, I have tried translating entire pages, video subtitles, images and manga, and meeting subtitles.
The sixth installment deals with the smallest unit among them.
Instead of translating pages, videos, or images all at once, you look only at the words, sentences, or paragraphs right in front of you. It is a feature that seems easy to use not only for gathering information but also for checking meanings while reading the original text.

✏️ Trying out text selection translation
First, let's look at text selection translation.
When I dragged the English text on my self-made page, a pink activation point appeared near the selection. In this environment, the translation result does not open just by selecting the text; translation begins when you press this activation point.

The display of the entire page remains as it is.
Since the translation entry point appears only near the selected area, you don't need to move to another tab or translation site.
Selecting a single word
First, I selected only the word `resilient`.
The pop-up that appeared included pronunciation, part of speech, definition, and example sentences, as well as an explanation tailored to the context of this page.

On this screen, I was able to confirm not only the definition of "elastic, capable of recovering," but also an explanation that in the context of a team adjusting plans in the face of unexpected delays, the nuance of recovering from difficulties is appropriate.
When you copy just a word and paste it into a dictionary, multiple candidates sometimes appear, and you may not know which one to choose.
Being able to see the surrounding text on the same page gives me, even with my poor English, clues to figure out which meaning is likely correct.
However, the displayed items and the level of detail in the explanations may vary depending on the selected words and the translation service used. In this article, I am only introducing what I was able to confirm on the screen this time.
Selecting a single sentence
Next, I selected just one sentence.
`The team adjusted its plan after the first test revealed an unexpected delay.`
When I selected this sentence, the following Japanese translation appeared in the pop-up.
The team adjusted its plan after the first test revealed an unexpected delay.

Unlike when selecting a word, definitions and example sentences were not listed; instead, the translation of the selected sentence was displayed concisely.
Even with the same text selection translation, the format of the information provided changes depending on whether you select a word or a sentence.
Select only a word when you want to see its meaning and how it is used.
Select a sentence when you want to know what is being conveyed as a whole.
Before changing the entire page to Japanese, you can adjust the selection range according to the size of your question.
🖱️ Check only a paragraph with mouse hover translation
With text selection translation, I dragged the range I wanted to check myself.
Mouse hover translation is a feature that displays a translation by hovering the mouse over a paragraph and pressing a configured modifier key.
The official guide states that this feature is disabled by default. You must first enable it in the Immersive Translate panel.

In this settings screen, I chose `Ctrl` as the trigger method. Since the key can be changed in the settings, I am introducing it here as it was set on my device.
After clicking on my own page once, I held down `Ctrl` and hovered the mouse over the paragraph I wanted to check.

The entire page remained in English, and only the paragraph I hovered over switched to Japanese. Since it doesn't open a separate screen and the position of the paragraph doesn't change, you can check the content while keeping the surrounding English text visible.
In the browser extension shortcut settings, I also assigned `Alt+H` to the operation for temporarily enabling/disabling direct hover translation. `Ctrl` is the key for translating a paragraph, while `Alt+H` is for temporarily turning the direct hover translation feature itself ON/OFF.
The difference from text selection translation is that you can check paragraphs as a whole without having to drag precisely over a range.
Use text selection translation for detailed word meanings. Use mouse hover translation for the flow of a paragraph. I was able to use them differently depending on the size of the area I wanted to check.
If it doesn't work, click once inside the page to focus it, and check the shortcut keys displayed in the settings screen. The official FAQ also provides this as a way to check if hover translation is not working.
📖 Read the original text first with "Blur Translation"
When you display the entire page in two languages, your eyes inevitably drift toward the Japanese translation first.
This is helpful when you want to know the content quickly, but when you want to practice reading English, you might see the answer before reading the original text.
"Blur Translation" is a way to use the tool where the translation displayed on the page is blurred, allowing you to check only the parts you need.

This time, I assigned `Alt+B` to "Toggle current page translation to blur effect (learning mode)." When you switch from the normal two-language display using `Alt+B`, the English original text remains readable while only the Japanese translation is blurred.

When you hover your mouse over the blurred Japanese translation, that specific part becomes readable. Since the other translations remain hidden, you can create a workflow where you read the original text first and check the answer only for the parts you don't understand.
Instead of reading only in Japanese from the start, you look at the original text first. You check the translation only where you don't understand. It's a way of reading that sits in the middle—not struggling with only English, nor relying entirely on Japanese from the beginning.
Beyond foreign language learning, it also seems useful when you want to follow headings or short paragraphs in the original language and check the meaning only for important parts.
🖼️ Translate text inside images by selecting it
The selection translation covered so far applied to text that can be dragged on a web page.
Text inside images, such as reference images, screenshots, or manga speech bubbles, cannot be selected by normal dragging.
Immersive Translate also offers a feature where you hold down the `Z` key and use your mouse to draw a box around an area in an image to recognize and translate the text.

You can extract and check only the necessary speech bubbles or explanatory parts rather than the entire image.
I tested the operation flow of this feature in detail in the fourth article. The difference from text selection translation is whether it is "selectable text" or "text inside an image."

🔀 If you're not sure which one to use
The four features can be categorized by the situation in which you want to use them as follows.
You don't need to use everything at once.
Use selection translation for short questions. Use hover translation for the flow of a paragraph. Use web page translation when you want to read the entire page. Use blur translation if you want to keep practicing reading the original text.
You can change how much you rely on Japanese depending on your goal at the time.

🌱 Summary
This time, I tried using it to check only the necessary parts instead of translating the entire page.
With text selection translation, the format of the information displayed changes between words and sentences
When selecting a word, I could check the pronunciation, part of speech, definition, example sentences, and context-based explanations
When selecting a sentence, I could concisely check the Japanese translation of that sentence
With mouse hover translation, I could switch only the paragraph I hovered over to Japanese by holding down 'Ctrl', without changing the entire page
With blur translation, I could hide only the Japanese translation and check it only when hovering the mouse over it
Text inside images can be checked by enclosing it with the image area selection translation
When reading an English page, just having one part you don't understand can make the whole page feel distant.
But if you can check only the necessary parts on the spot, you don't have to let go of the parts you can read.
Translate everything or read everything yourself. It's not just those two choices; you can get a little help only where you get stuck. The features this time were small tools for that purpose.

✍️ Afterword
Thank you for reading this far.
In this series, we started by choosing a translation engine and gradually tried out everything from web pages and video subtitles to images, manga, and meeting subtitles.
Perhaps the greatest harvest for me while trying out various translations is that the barrier I felt toward English has disappeared.
Even when I see English, I just try to translate it. I hope to make that a habit.
Immersive Translate's appeal, I hope it has come across even a little.
Following or clicking "Like" would be encouraging!
Thank you for your continued support!
