Small Habits to Keep Moving Even When 'The Reality That Your Passion Isn't Always Your Job' Hits
Hello! It's Nagisa. 🌼
Today, I've written a gentle article for those of you who are feeling a little tired from the conflict between the dream of wanting to make your passion your job and the reality that things don't always go as planned.
Chasing a dream might look glamorous, but
it actually takes a lot of energy, doesn't it?
When you feel that way, how can you keep looking forward? Let's think together about some 'small habits' that will help you move forward one step at a time while cherishing your heart and not giving up. 🌸
1. Why it's okay if 'Passion ≠ Job' 💼💕
Wanting to make your passion your job is a wonderful thing. ✨
Getting paid to do what you love sounds like a dream, and it's only natural to feel a little envious when you see people who are doing it.
But... the reality is that it's not that simple.
So, the most important thing I want to tell you here is this: 'Even if your passion isn't your job, your value doesn't diminish in the slightest.' 🍀
🌟 Elements of a job other than 'passion'
There are many aspects of a job that you can't sustain just by 'liking' it.
For example, constraints on money and time, interpersonal relationships, deadlines, evaluations...
You might 'love drawing,' but find it painful to 'make revisions as requested,' and
you might 'love writing,' but find it agonizing to 'write under the pressure of deadlines.'
In other words, when 'passion' becomes a source of pressure, it can turn into 'exhaustion.' 💦
🌷 It's okay to keep 'work' and 'hobbies' separate
I personally think the choice to 'intentionally keep your passion as a hobby' is very precious. ✨
For example, a drawing you made slowly on your day off, or a diary entry that no one else will ever see.
Even if no one is evaluating them, the time you spend fulfilling your own heart is truly irreplaceable.
Those kinds of 'passions' exist for you, not to meet someone else's expectations. You don't have to force them into money; you can cherish them and let them grow just as they are. 🍀
🌼 'What you're doing now' is also a respectable choice that supports you
Do you ever blame yourself, thinking, 'I really want to live by doing what I love, but I'm working a different job'? That's actually a very strong choice. You're choosing a way to stabilize your life so that you can cherish your passion.
In fact, because your life foundation is secure, your 'passion' can sometimes turn into a source of joy rather than pressure. ✨ Thinking of things as 'main job and side hustle' or 'main job and hobby' is an important way to protect yourself.
💖 Your 'passion' won't disappear
There might be times when you feel that 'if my passion doesn't become my job, the dream is over.' But I believe dreams are things that 'change shape and continue to exist.'
The dreams you had as a child, the professions you once admired—even if they haven't come true, they are still influencing who you are today, right?
So, 'not becoming a job' isn't an end; it's proof that it has become 'sustenance' that supports you in a different way. ✨
2. Self-care for when you're tired of the gap with reality 🛁🌙
'I have a dream, but it's not working out.'
'I only see people shining on social media, and I feel like I'm stagnating.'
It's normal to feel exhausted in your heart when you're caught between reality and your ideals.
Nagisa calls it 'mental muscle soreness' when that happens.
Your heart is just a little sore because you worked so hard toward your dream.
Here, I'll introduce some care methods to gently soothe that 'muscle soreness'🌸
🫧① The courage to distance yourself from social media
One of the biggest causes of mental fatigue is comparing your own life to the success of others.
Social media, in particular, is a world curated to look good, so even if everyone is actually struggling, only the shining parts flow through.
That's exactly why choosing to 'not look' is so important✨
Try taking time away from your timeline to focus on your own feelings.
As a small habit for a social media detox, I recommend starting with methods like:
Not looking at your phone for 30 minutes after waking up
No phone while in the bath
Trying to log out just on weekends
💡
🫖② Let's try keeping a 'done list'
When you're tired, it's easy to fall into a mindset of blaming yourself, thinking, 'I haven't done this yet' or 'That's still half-finished...'💦
At times like that, I want you to try writing down what you 'did today'!
It's okay no matter how small it is☀️
Woke up on time
Made coffee
Replied to an email
Took a nap because thinking was exhausting (← this is important too!)
Writing it down will help you feel relieved, thinking, 'Oh, I wasn't doing nothing at all...'🌷 Let's gradually rewrite the thoughts of blaming yourself into 'thoughts of being kind to yourself'✨
🛁③ Dare to have a 'do-nothing day'
When you can't move, it's easy to think 'doing nothing = a bad day,' but
actually, 'doing nothing' is the 'ultimate energy recharge'🍀
Doing nothing actually takes quite a bit of courage.
That's why you should declare to yourself, 'I've decided today is a do-nothing day~♪,' and
proudly lounge around to maintain your heart and body💤
Watching videos of your favorite idols in bed, taking a leisurely bath, or
having a day where you work hard at 'not working hard' is perfectly fine🌈
Chasing a dream is wonderful, but it's also very delicate and can be easily hurt.
So, when your heart gets tired, please cherish even the feelings you had when you wanted to 'work hard'.
The path to your ideals isn't always straight; it's natural for it to be winding. At times like that, don't rush—take a deep breath—
and acknowledge yourself, saying, 'I am living my life today, and that's enough.'🫶💗
3. Small actions change the future: The 3-minute rule⏳
“I have things I want to do, but I just can't seem to get started…”
“I understand it in my head, but my body just won't follow through…”
I think everyone feels that way sometimes.
But you know, there’s a magical habit that has really helped me, Nagisa.🌷
It’s—“the 3-minute rule”!⏳✨
🌼The revolution of trying for just 3 minutes
The human brain is wired to naturally hit the brakes when you seek 'big things' or 'perfect results'.
So, for example, if you set a goal like 'finish one illustration' or 'write one blog post,' your brain automatically decides it's 'too much trouble' and stops you from moving.💦
That’s why, if you decide to 'just try it for 3 minutes,'
the resistance in your brain weakens, and strangely, it becomes easier for your body to move!
Open your sketchbook and draw lines for just 3 minutes
Open your text editor and think of a title for just 3 minutes
Look through your materials for just 3 minutes
By creating such a 'super low-hurdle first step,' you create momentum.🪄
🌟3 minutes is the first step to becoming 'someone who can keep going'
The important thing here is to give yourself permission to stop after 3 minutes!
It often happens that once you start, you get into the flow and realize 30 minutes have passed, but even on days when you finish in just 3 minutes,
that is still a valid “proof of action”✨
The track record of having 'taken action' gradually builds your self-esteem.
Doesn't it feel exciting that even just 3 minutes can become a 'routine that changes your future'?🌈
🧘♀️The 'sense of security' the 3-minute rule gives you
I use this rule especially when my heart is feeling weak.🌙
You might be able to work hard when you're feeling energetic, but when you're tired, you sometimes have no motivation at all. But when you can think, 'Let's just try for 3 minutes,' your heart strangely feels lighter.
Moving in small ways while accepting yourself even when you can't work hard.
That is how you gradually build a relationship of trust with yourself.✨
Instead of not acting at all, let's praise ourselves for moving for 3 minutes.🍀
Small, kind rules for yourself will help your future self.
4. A habit of affirming 'doing it even if you're not a pro'🌟
“I'm still not good enough…”
“It's not at a level I can show others…”
Can't you hear those voices denying your 'non-pro self'?🫧
But Nagisa wants to say this out loud💥
“You don't have to be a pro to do it, to keep doing it, and to enjoy it!”🌈✨
🎨You don't need a 'qualification' to express yourself
For example, drawing, playing music, or writing stories—
those kinds of expressions are, at their core, the very 'joy of living'.
Yet, before you know it, you get swallowed up by an atmosphere that says 'if you're not good, it's no good' or 'if you're going to share it, you have to do it properly,' making you feel like 'not being good = having no value,' which can be painful.
But I want you to think about it for a second. The scribbles a baby draws are so cute and warm your heart, right?
That's not about technique, it's because you can feel the 'life itself that is there'🍀
In other words, it's not that 'being good = justice,' but rather that **'there is meaning in doing it'**💫
🧶'Continuing while still being bad' is the strongest thing
A common misunderstanding is the belief that 'you shouldn't share your work unless you improve.'
But you know, Nagisa doesn't think 'you're amazing because you're good,' but rather 'you're amazing because you keep doing it'✨
Drawing steadily every day
Singing occasionally when you feel like it
Writing your own novel
Things like this—'doing something even if you don't show anyone or get praised by anyone'—are truly precious.
That's because it's something that only people who carry a small light inside their hearts can do🌟
🌱A mindset to affirm your 'non-pro self'
When you feel like 'I'm not a pro, so I can't have confidence,' I want you to try thinking the opposite: 'What even is a pro?'
Is it a pro because they get paid?
Is it a pro because they are better than others?
Is it a pro because they've been doing it for a long time?
Actually, the definition of 'pro' is very vague. That is precisely why you should be more proud of the simple fact within yourself that 'I am doing this'✨
A message from Nagisa💌
Even if no one recognizes it,
that feeling you have of 'I want to try this' or 'I might like this'
is a one-of-a-kind 'seed of creation' in this world🌸
It's not about whether you're a pro or not, it's 'doing it because you love it'. That simple feeling is the strongest and most beautiful thing of all💖
5. Take a break from social media and regain your own pace 📵
Have you ever noticed yourself opening social media multiple times a day?
'Everyone else is working so hard'
'I'm the only one not making any progress...'
Nagisa often feels down like that too, you know 🥺💭
But actually, social media also has a side that's like a 'machine for comparing yourself to others.'
It's convenient, but if you use it the wrong way, your heart will gradually wear down.
🌪 3 reasons why social media makes your heart tired
Because you only see the 'bright side' of others
→ What gets posted on social media is mostly 'things that went well' or 'sparkly moments.'
But that's just a tiny part of life, right?
It's only natural to feel down when you compare someone else's highlight reel to your own behind-the-scenes.Because you start feeling like likes and reactions are your 'self-worth'
→ Feeling down because 'there was no reaction to my post...'
isn't actually because the 'feelings you wanted to convey' didn't reach anyone,
but because you feel like your 'very existence has been denied.'Because it looks like someone is always ahead of you
→ On social media, it looks like people of all ages and genres are achieving 'results' all at once. But whether those 'results' aresomething necessary for your own lifeis a completely different story 🌱
🍵 Turning 'comparison time' into 'deep breathing time'
When you feel tired of social media, you don't have to force yourself to keep looking at it 🌙
Nagisa recommends creating a 'social media fasting day' 🍽📴
Turn off your smartphone just in the morning and drink coffee
Hide Instagram or X (formerly Twitter) for just one day
Even if you take photos, don't 'upload' them and keep them in your own private album
Just doing that will make you feel your heart become a little lighter ✨
🧭 'Your own pace' is not decided by others
You don't have to be at the same speed as anyone else.
It's okay to live at your own 'rhythm of breathing.' Nagisa believes that 'the moment you stop comparing, true creation begins' 🍀
6. A perspective that doesn't measure what you love only by 'money' 💰→❤️
You often hear the phrase 'Let's make what you love your job!' 🌈
Of course, that's a wonderful thing. But Nagisa thinks a little bit about it.
'If it doesn't make money, does what I love have no value?' 😢
💡 'Cannot be monetized' does not mean 'it's meaningless'!
Social media, YouTube, blogs, creative activities...
Right now, there's a very strong atmosphere of 'If you're going to do it, monetize it!'
But aren't you getting pulled by that atmosphere and losing sight of your original 'love'? 🌀
For example:
I loved drawing, but I started only drawing what sells and it became painful
What I started because I wanted someone to praise me is now being chased by 'numbers'
I started sighing, thinking, 'I was supposed to love this...'
That happens, doesn't it?
🌱 There are many 'values' other than 'money'!
The time spent drawing is fun
I connected with the people who saw my work
I felt satisfied being able to express my own world
I noticed myself improving a little bit every day
These 'inner realizations' are actually incredibly valuable!
In fact, they might be more important than money 💖
💬 Questions to protect your 'passion' as it is
When you are lost, try asking yourself these questions:
'Even if this never makes money in my life, do I want to do it?'
'When I 'sell' this, am I lying to my heart?'
'Are you really feeling whether you are 'genuinely enjoying' it?'
If you can think 'yes',
that alone is a 'passion' that is valuable enough 🌟
7. Summary: Let's face our passions 'gently and warmly' 🕊
To you who have read this far, there is something I, Nagisa, want to tell you at the end.
Facing your 'passion' is,
actually very delicate, difficult, but also a very beautiful thing.
There are times when you feel impatient, depressed, or compare yourself to others.
But you know, the very fact that you have a 'passion' is already a miracle🌟
It's okay if what you want to do hasn't taken shape yet.
Even if things don't go as planned, there is still meaning in it.
I believe the most important thing is to keep going without lying to yourself.🍀
Nagisa believes that is the magic to staying with what you love for a long time.🧚♀️✨
