🌿Vol.5 Insect Repellent Measures - The Battle Against Autumn Night 'Sounds' and Mosquitoes
The sound of autumn insects, moonlight, the murmuring of a river.
I went out hoping to record those kinds of magical night sounds.
Driving for 30 minutes, partly to test my newly purchased equipment.
I attempted my first night recording at a suburban park.
But that night turned into a 'battle with insects' I don't even want to remember.
☘️ My First Night Recording and Troubles
The moment I pressed the record button while checking the settings on my Zoom F3 and microphone.
Mosquitoes appeared from nowhere.
It was impossible to focus on sound. I interrupted the recording many times while being bitten on my hands and neck.
'So this is what recording natural sounds is like...'
That was the lesson I learned on my first night.
The quiet night, the rustling of wind and grass, the voices of insects.
Everything was perfect, but I had to retreat while fighting off the itchiness.
I couldn't use almost any of the audio from that day.
(Actually, it wasn't just the mosquitoes' fault; due to a mistake in the equipment settings, I couldn't even record video because of a microphone and Zoom setting error...)
☘️ I Consulted an AI
'How does everyone handle insect repellent for night shoots?'
That was the simple question that started my conversation with my AI (Emiri).
AI Emiri answered in a calm voice.
'For night nature photography, the key is to choose an insect repellent that doesn't affect the sound.'
And what Emiri taught me was
'insect repellent measures that harmonize with nature.'
🌿 Insect Repellent Measures Recommended by My AI
🍃 1. Spray type that doesn't interfere with sound
・Unscented or lightly scented type (apply directly to skin)
→ The scent won't be carried by the wind during recording.
・Recommended ingredients: Contains DEET or Icaridin.
🌿 2. Portable battery-operated insect repellent
・Type that can be attached to a waist or backpack belt.
→ The trick is to keep it a little away from the microphone picking up the sound.
・By waterfalls or rivers at night, it's more effective if placed at your feet.
🕯️ 3. Insect repellent candle or incense
・Convenient when the shooting location is fixed.
→ Keeps insects away with citronella ingredients.
→ Since it uses fire, be careful of wind and safety.
💧 4. Don't forget skin care
・Bring soothing gel or Muhi for insect bites.
→ Care after shooting prevents the itchiness from lasting until the next day.
🌳 Summary and Message to Readers
Recording the sounds of nature also means
'placing yourself within nature.'
If you want to capture the voices of night insects,
perhaps you need to learn how to get along with the insects as well.
Through my interaction with AI Emiri,
I realized that not only 'equipment' but also 'harmony with the environment' is important.
Long autumn nights.
Next time, I'm going to go record the murmuring of the river that I couldn't hear that time.
