[30-Day OJT Note | Day 11] The Teacher Keeps Learning—The Moment the Teacher Grows
To those who, having gotten used to their work at a dispatch assignment, were suddenly tasked with "teaching the new temp" and found themselves having to do everything on their own.
I am writing this for you, who may feel anxious because you have nothing to compare your methods against to see if you are doing it right.
You might feel like you are struggling with everything alone.
I am writing this for you, who are feeling uneasy.
OJT is often thought of as a "place for new employees to grow," but it is actually an opportunity for the teacher to grow as well.
In the process of explaining things to new employees and answering their questions, there are moments when you realize you are learning things all over again yourself.
1. Explaining deepens your understanding
"Why do I do it this way?"
When a new employee asks you something and you get stuck, you end up researching or organizing your thoughts again.
In that process, your own understanding deepens by one level.
Teaching is also a way of taking inventory of your knowledge.
2. You gain new perspectives
The simple questions from new employees or their suggestions like "How about doing it this way?"
can bring ideas that a veteran might not have.
Sometimes, a single word from a new employeecan even become a hint for business improvement.
3. You notice your own challenges
"My explanation was too long," or "I answered before waiting for their question."
While interacting with new employees, you can objectively look back on your own teaching style.
OJT serves as a mirror for self-growth for the teacher as well.
4. You gain confidence as a "mentor"
OJT, which you might have felt was "tough" at first, changes into the realization that
"I can actually train people too" as you continue.
That becomes amajor strengthin your career.
Summary for today
• Teaching deepens your own understanding
• A new employee's perspective can trigger business improvements
• You can review your own teaching style
• The experience of teaching remains as "confidence"
