When you give a gift to someone special with your first salary, it may become a memory that the recipient will never forget for the rest of their life.
【My Son's First Salary】
Thirteen years ago, in April, my eldest son gave my wife and me a 'Pair Dinner Voucher for the Imperial Hotel' as a gift from his first salary. I still clearly remember how surprised I was, and at the same time, how very happy I felt.
My wife and I went out, saying to each other, 'Eating a French course meal for two at the Imperial Hotel is something that probably won't happen in our lives, either in the past or in the future.'
It was a summer evening, and it was quite empty, with only a few tables on the floor occupied. It was a very luxurious situation where each of those few tables had a dedicated waiter who took care of everything for us.
The French cuisine at that time was delicious, of course, and the service was perfect. The waiter, who had heard the reason for our meal, even called the chef over at the end, and they even took a commemorative photo with us.
While eating, I spent a quiet, calm, and fulfilling time with my wife, and I felt something warm welling up from the bottom of my heart. 'What is this feeling?......' '.......' 'I see, this feeling is the feeling of happiness!!' I realized.
'The child who was so small when he was born has grown up safely without any major illnesses and has become a working adult. And he has even reached the point of giving us this meal as a gift with his first salary. How happy I am!' I felt it deeply. My wife felt exactly the same way as I did.
I didn't realize it when I was a child, but after becoming a parent, I realized this feeling of happiness for the first time through what my child did for me.
【My Own First Salary】
When I was a sophomore in college, my father passed away at the age of 47. He was a teacher at a night high school, and since I was small, two of his former students had always taken care of me, my younger brother, and my mother. One was Mr. F, who, during his high school days, was a super famous delinquent in the local area and had reportedly been expelled from another school before coming to the night high school. The other, Mr. T, was a super serious, struggling student who had lost his father early and attended night high school while working during the day.
When my father passed away, Mr. F and Mr. T had been associated with us for 20 years, and at the funeral, the two of them took care of everything with great kindness, so the neighbors said, 'It's reliable that you have two such solid relatives,' and were surprised when we answered, 'No, they are not relatives, they are my father's former students.'
Two and a half years later, when I got a job, Mr. F and Mr. T were worried about me because I had lost my father and was too serious (at that time), so they took me out to drink at a snack bar to celebrate my employment.
The results of drinking, singing, and dancing with friends during my college days showed, and seeing me like that, the two of them seemed relieved, saying, 'If he's like this, he'll manage even when he goes out into society!'
Eventually, time passed, and it was my father's 33rd memorial service. Thinking this would be the final memorial service for my father, I consulted with my mother, and we held the memorial service with Mr. F and Mr. T in attendance, and the four of us had a meal together.
It had been 30 years since I became a working adult, but at that meal, Mr. F said, 'Come to think of it, when S-chan (me) got a job, he sent me a letter and ten brand-new 1,000-yen bills, saying he had received his first salary.' I had completely forgotten about that, and my mother didn't remember it either. My first salary at that time was 117,000 yen, and since I was in a dormitory and undergoing training for a month, after deducting food expenses, dormitory fees, and newspaper costs, my take-home pay was 72,000 yen.
My previous job was at a bank, so I remembered that new employees were paid their entire first salary of 72,000 yen in brand-new 1,000-yen bills to practice counting money.
I was surprised and moved that Mr. F said, 'I still keep the letter I received from S-chan at that time with care.' Then Mr. T said, 'That's right, S-chan sent me a letter and ten brand-new 1,000-yen bills, saying he had received his first salary. I still keep the letter with care, and I still have the money just as it was ......I can never use that money in my life!'
My mother and I were doing our best to hold back the tears that were about to come out.
