2024 Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Specialist Exam Experience Part 1: The Road to Taking the Exam
Introduction
The Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Specialist Exam is a gateway for anesthesiologists aiming to become specialists in cardiovascular anesthesia.🐉
However, the requirements for taking the exam are varied, making the difficulty level somewhat high.💧
“When should I start preparing?”
“Is it easy to collect enough cases?”
“Are academic presentations and papers really necessary?”
Many doctors likely have these kinds of concerns.❓🧐
I also had similar anxieties until I took the 2024 Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Specialist Exam.
In this article, while looking back on my own experience, I will convey the road to the specialist exam as concretely as possible.❗️
Since it is expected to be a long article, I will present it as a series over several parts to maintain readability. (^^)
Also, at the end of the series, I plan to create an original problem set (with explanations here and there) by field.

Hurdles for Exam Eligibility
First, regarding exam eligibility.
To be honest, the hurdles are quite high.😅
Prerequisite Checklist
✅ Hold a Board Certified Anesthesiologist qualification (as of April 1st of the application year).
※The earliest one can take the exam is in their 8th year after graduating from medical school.
✅ Membership in the Japanese Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology for 5 years or more
※Don't forget to pay your membership fees!
✅ Pass the JB-POT
※Please refer to my other article for details.
✅ Obtain 100 points or more in achievements
※Balance is important (described later).
✅ Experience with 100 or more cardiovascular anesthesia cases
※Congenital heart disease is the bottleneck!
Breakdown of Achievement Points
Just attending academic conferences is not enough.😂
The following balance is required:
Academic conference attendance: 60 points or more
Other activities: 40 points or more
Academic presentations (First author: 10 points, Co-author: 5 points)
Writing papers (Original article or case report, First author: 20 points, Co-author: 10 points)
(Others, First author: 10 points, Co-author: 5 points)
Attendance at workshops/seminars (※Up to a maximum of 20 points)
In my case...
Academic meetings: Attended 4 times (20 points x 4, but capped at 60 points)
Academic presentations: 1 time as first author + 2 times as co-author (10 points + 5 points x 2 → 20 points total)
Seminars: Attended several times (capped at 20 points)
I managed to clear it with a total of 100 points!

Tips for Securing Case Numbers
This is especially important.💡
The required number of cases is:
A total of 100 cases or more (over 5 years).
Of which 30 cases must be at a certified facility, including
10 cases of congenital heart disease.
My experience:
I spent a long time at a university hospital and was able to experience a total of about 170 cardiovascular anesthesia cases in 5 years.
In particular, the following strategy was successful in securing cases of congenital heart disease (mainly ASD, VSD):
Early expression of intent and active self-promotion📣
→I showed my superiors my intention to take the specialist exam and my enthusiasm for congenital cases.
I was able to have cases assigned to me preferentially, and I was able to focus on learning anesthesia for pediatric congenital heart disease.📚
Application
There is an application period of 2 months every year from April to May.
You can apply by downloading the form from the Japanese Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology website.
Conclusion
Early preparation is important for everything.😌
Especially...
・Joining the academic society should be done soon after finishing residency
・JB-POT should be taken with plenty of time (I obtained mine in my 5th year as a doctor)
・Case numbers should be planned systematically
