Checkout Line Design: Traffic Jams / Pedestrian Congestion ++
There are occasional discussions about tips and clever flow examples for queuing at supermarket checkouts/payment counters. There seem to be several requirements that each of us should keep in mind.
◆ 'Single-line queuing'
It's a good design 👍 *I will omit the explanation.
However, there are behaviors that create side effects from this; can you imagine them? It's something to be conscious of 😵
◆ Organize the items in your own basket
Thoughtful considerations are hard for others to notice. However, by doing this, at least the processing time for your own items will be slightly reduced, so it is worth practicing 👍
◆ Do not go to a self-checkout if you have many items
You will occupy it for a long time. In other words, be aware that you are becoming an obstacle to those who could use it effectively, and refrain from doing so.
One could also think about points for improvement from the store/cashier's perspective, but since it is not a self-contained task on their side, it is difficult to achieve real results even with good planning, as various 'carefree' customers are involved.
If that's the case, what is concerning is that 'it is difficult to move a large, indifferent crowd' ---. There is no easy answer for how to 'direct' people who are convinced that their own words and actions are the most appropriate. It would be ridiculous to let other people's reactions cause you stress 😝
Cases where [almost everyone is convinced] or [everyone is mistaken about 'if we did this, it would be better'] are in line with the style I always raise and call for in my notes 💡
Furthermore.
When you unravel the essence of this 'checkout congestion' topic, the inappropriateness of the behavior of the [person right in front of you] when it is finally your turn (i.e., the blank time created because they didn't choose a lane quickly after the single-line queue / the 'side effect' example mentioned above) becomes a factor that further worsens the situation, which is already frustrating due to the congestion!
Can you think of an extension from the development above?
They also exude an attitude of having already given up on the smoothness of the flow, thinking, 'Sigh, is it finally my turn? 😞', and because the result 'for the person themselves' in this step does not change, the motivation to be smart for the people behind them is 'no longer there'.This is the reason.
Oh, this reminds me of the following post I wrote, which I raised as 'an area that receives almost no attention in the analysis of the essence of [congestion], especially in automobile traffic!', so I would like to introduce it here as well 🙇
It also applies to walking through crowds, such as in urban train stations ☝
◆ Let's stalk the person walking right in front of us!
◆ If that person is walking faster than you, let's follow someone else nearby who has a similar pace!
◆ If someone with the same pace is slightly ahead of you, don't 'shift diagonally behind to secure a blank space in front of you', but walk in a single file!
*Did you see the article about tips for walking?
This time, instead, here is a unique observation on 'where to stand on the train' ✍
