Onyx | Remembering Your Own Core ~Aya's Natural Stone Stories~

Hello. I am Aya, a 'Natural Stone and Words Creator'.

In my work as a natural stone jewelry artist, there have been many memorable events. Each encounter reflects a person's journey and feelings, as if I am watching a story unfold.

Today, I am going to tell you the story of 'Onyx'.

Recently, I made an onyx ring.

It is simple, quiet, and I like it very much.

As I was looking at it, a thought suddenly crossed my mind.

It looks like a jumping spider.

It is not that I like spiders. It is just that they appear in the materials I use at my English conversation class, so I happen to know about them.

The three black onyx stones look like they are staring right at me.
For some reason, they are starting to look cute.

Ever since then, I have had an overwhelming urge to create black-themed pieces.

When it comes to onyx, I think many people have the image of it being a 'protective stone' or a 'stone that wards off evil'.

It certainly has that side to it. It is a stone with a history of being used as an amulet to protect oneself from evil spirits in ancient Persia and India.

However, onyx is also associated with the concept of a 'personal core.' It is not a black that erases someone else's color. It is a black that brings out the colors that person already possesses.

Gentle pink. Quiet blue. Soft green. When placed next to onyx, those colors strangely start to look 'like themselves'.

There is a pair of earrings I made using that onyx.

It was born in the middle of the night.

I happened to open Instagram and saw a post about Paris Fashion Week. Eccentric designs. Combinations of different materials. Even things that made me think, 'Wait, are people really wearing that?', the models walked with confidence and dignity.

As I watched, I felt an irresistible urge to create.

It is okay to be eccentric. It is okay to use different materials. It does not have to be someone else's idea of correct; it is fine to choose what I love.

I just took out various materials, laid them out aimlessly, and while I was playing around, these earrings were born.

Now, looking back on that night, I realized something.

Models walking the runway with dignity, wearing any outfit with unwavering confidence. The onyx I chose unconsciously represented my 'core self'...

There is a legend that onyx was formed when the fingernails of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, fell to the earth and turned into stone. It is a mystery why it became a 'stone of protection' from there, but if you think of it as a fragment of a god's body, it somehow makes sense. It is a beautiful and slightly mysterious legend.
