Miyakojima is an island of the sea, but it is also a golfer's paradise. The average annual temperature is about 23°C, and there are almost no days even in winter where it drops below 10°C. In this article, I will write about 'when you should go,' 'which course to choose,' and even how to balance family travel with golf.
First, the conclusion. The best season is from November to April. Being able to play a round along the coast in light clothing during the season when golfers on the mainland are freezing in winter gear—this is the greatest value of golf in Miyakojima. And if you have to choose just one course, my top recommendation is Emerald Coast Golf Links.
Why 'Winter is the Holy Land'
Climate: Even from December to February, the daytime temperature is around 20°C. It is a world free from the 'numb hands' and 'frozen greens' of winter golf on the mainland.
Travel Costs: Winter is the off-season for the entire island, so flights and accommodations are significantly cheaper than in summer. If your purpose is golf, this is the season with the best overall cost-performance for your trip (the charm of Miyakojima in winter is in the third article → [Can you enjoy Miyakojima in winter? A true record of playing it to the fullest in January and why the off-season is the best time to visit [2026 Edition] | Miyako Beach Resort]).
There is one point of caution: the wind. In winter, there are days with strong north winds, and links courses along the sea become a battle against the wind. If you can have multiple candidate days during your stay, you can schedule your round for a day with less wind—this is the strength of 'stay-and-play' golf.
Conversely, summer is honestly a war of attrition. Intense sunlight, high temperatures, afternoon squalls, and typhoons. If you play in the summer, plan for an early morning start with through-play to finish by noon, and survive by choosing 'courses with plenty of shade' as described below.
Getting to know the courses in Miyakojima
Emerald Coast Golf Links: Opened in 1988, it is the island's most historic championship course. Adjacent to Yonaha Maehama Beach, which is called the 'best in the East,' the famous 16th hole is the only hole in Miyakojima that crosses the sea. The teeing area, which overlooks the Kurima Bridge and the emerald sea, is a spectacular view that will make you stop playing just to look. Including the Ryukyu-style clubhouse and the large public bath with an ocean view, it is the complete form of island golf.

Ocean Links Miyakojima: A full-scale links course spread across the spectacular Higashi-hennazaki Cape area. The OUT course runs along the sea where you can hear the sound of the waves, and the IN course utilizes the subtropical nature. The panoramic large public bath in the clubhouse, surrounded by the sea on almost all sides, is also famous. On windy days, it becomes a true 'battle with nature' typical of a links course.

Shigira Bay Country Club: Located within the Shigira Resort. It is a resort course where you can see the sea from every hole, and its strength is that it is easy to combine with your accommodation.

Why I recommend Emerald
The spectacular view is as I wrote above, but there is one more reason I want to recommend it as someone who has actually played there. Emerald has surprisingly a lot of shade. Because the course design utilizes the subtropical forest, there are many moments even during a midsummer round where you can catch your breath in the shade, and the level of exhaustion is completely different. It is this shade that makes the seemingly reckless plan of 'playing golf in Miyakojima in the summer' a realistic one. Also, compared to Ocean Links, its location where you can feel the sea overwhelmingly is also a strength.

The style of island golf is a little different from the mainland
Miyakojima courses are basically resort-style. 2-some play for just two people is OK, driving the cart onto the fairway is OK (depending on the weather), through-play without a break, and casual attire is fine. The pleasure of island golf is being able to break free from the mainland mold of 'gathering four people, leaving early in the morning, and playing until evening with a lunch break in between.'
How to balance family travel and golf
Many of our guests are 'moms and dads who want to play golf for just half a day.' There are three tips to make it work.
Early morning start x through-play so you can return to your accommodation by early afternoon.
The rest of the family can spend the day relaxing at the accommodation's pool or a nearby beach—if you rent a whole house, the 'sending-off side' can also stay comfortable at home.
Clubs can be rented to travel light. You can free yourself from the hassle and excess baggage fees of air transport (check availability when booking). Rentals cost about 7,000 yen. If you are shipping them from Tokyo, it is overwhelmingly cheaper to use Yu-Pack (5,360 yen round trip) rather than Kuroneko Yamato (9,000 yen round trip).
Since some courses allow bookings months in advance, go ahead and secure your tee time at the same time you book your flights and accommodation once your itinerary is set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What should I wear in winter? A. During the day, it feels like spring or autumn on the mainland (polo shirt + light jacket). However, since the wind can make it feel colder, a windbreaker is a must.
Q. Is it okay if I haven't played golf in years? A. Resort golf is all about being casual. Since you can play as a 2-some without worry and conserve energy by driving the cart onto the fairway, I think it's actually perfect for a comeback.
Q. What if it rains? A. Rain on the island is often in the form of squalls, so you can sometimes resume play after waiting for it to pass. Courses are closed during typhoons.
Summary
The best season is November to April. Winter on the mainland is the perfect season for Miyakojima golf.
My top recommendation is Emerald Coast—it features the island's only 16th hole that crosses the sea, and plenty of shade which is great in the summer.
Balance it with family travel by using early morning through-play x rental clubs x renting a whole house.
