"Is it worth going to Miyako Island in winter?"—If I were asked that, I would answer not as a property manager, but as a traveler.Yes, it is. Tours are practically private, prices have off-season discounts, and the stars are at their most beautiful all year. Those who know, intentionally come in the winter.
Based on a true record of a 3-day, 2-night trip I actually took with a friend's family in January, I will honestly write about what you "can" and "cannot" do on Miyako Island in winter.
Can you swim in the ocean even in January?
Yes, you can. I participated in snorkel tours at Shigira Beach and Yabiji, and if you wear a wetsuit, the only time you feel cold is the moment you enter the water. The Shigira Beach snorkel tour is a beach entry, so it is suitable for beginners and children. The waves are calm, and there are plenty of corals and fish. On this day, I even got to play with a sea turtle.

It is difficult to "swim all day" like in midsummer. But "you can meet the world under the sea even in winter"—this is what makes Miyako Island amazing.
There are three advantages unique to winter
1. Tours are almost private I participated in a tour of the Pumpkin Limestone Cave, which can only be reached from the sea by kayak, and thanks to the off-season, it was almost entirely private. I heard the cave gets crowded in the summer, so I think winter is actually the best time to quietly enjoy that sacred space.
2. Prices go down The Yabiji snorkel tour had an off-season discount. Many Yabiji tours are canceled, but tours departing from Ikema Island operate even in winter. Both airfare and accommodation are significantly cheaper compared to the peak summer season. Our properties are no exception, and for the same stay, winter is definitely a better deal.
3. The stars are at their most beautiful all year Winter is the best season for stargazing because the air is clear. At night, I joined a stargazing tour and had a photographer take family photos under the starry sky. Miyako Beach Resort has an astronomical telescope, and that night we were able to observe the moon, Saturn, and even the Orion constellation, which became one of the highlights of the trip.

True record: What we did in 3 days and 2 nights in January
Day 1: Kayak fishing immediately after arrival. You can enjoy kayaking and fishing at the same time, and you catch colorful fish one after another. We took the fish we caught to the izakaya "Daruma" to have them prepared. At night, we went on a stargazing tour and did some astronomical observation with the telescope at our accommodation.
Day 2: In the morning, we snorkeled at Shigira Beach. For lunch, we ate at the ocean-view cafe "Tunkaraya" while swinging on a swing, and then experienced Shisa painting at the adjacent "Teidagama." In the afternoon, we went on a kayak & Pumpkin Limestone Cave tour. At night, we went on a jungle night tour.
Day 3: We went on a Yabiji snorkel tour from the morning. A manta ray and a turtle welcomed us right away. We finished the afternoon with an off-road buggy ride and headed home.

…Even though I am the one who wrote in my second article that "families with children should stay for 3 nights or more," this time it was a 3-day, 2-night trip. We packed so much in that we even cut into our meal times, and the adults were exhausted (laughs). However, it is a fact that because the weather is stable in winter, the probability of being able to "do everything" increases even on a short schedule.
Can children enjoy it even in winter?
The 10-year-old who came with us said the "best parts" were the Pumpkin Limestone Cave tour and the off-road buggy. If they are over 130cm tall, children can drive the off-road buggy by themselves, and they were so excited they begged to "extend the time." My impression is that because Miyako Island in winter isn't just about the ocean, the range of activities actually increases.
Honestly, things that aren't suitable for winter
Jungle Night Tour: Creatures like coconut crabs are hibernating, so we barely encountered any. This is an activity meant for summer.
Those who want to swim all day in just a swimsuit: If you want to swim seriously without a wetsuit, I honestly recommend July to September. I think children who are sensitive to the cold will be cold even with a wetsuit. If you are the type who can handle a cold bath, you will surely be fine even in winter.
I think it's fair to write about the downsides too, so I'm being honest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What should I wear in Miyakojima in winter? A. During the day, it feels like autumn on the main island of Japan, and a long-sleeved shirt plus a light outer layer is enough for most days. However, on windy days, the perceived temperature drops significantly, so it's safer to have a windbreaker.
Q. Is a wetsuit essential if I want to swim? A. Consider it essential from January to March. Most tours include rentals, so there is no need to bring your own. I can swim all seasons, but I think people who dislike cold water should avoid it.
Q. How about spring? A. I once stayed for a week in March, and the skin diving at Yabiji was fantastic thanks to the great weather. I think mid-March to mid-June, before the crowds and typhoons, is the best time to get the best of both winter and summer.
Summary
Winter in Miyakojima offersexclusivity, discounts, and starry skies—the perfect trifecta.
You can enter the sea in January if you have a wetsuit (though it takes a bit of determination).
Save the creature-focused night tours for summer.
