From Self-Blame to Self-Understanding(自己批判から自己理解へ)- The Guardian-like Tone

There have been moments throughout my life when I felt the urge to step away from myself — to loosen my grip on who I was and simply rest. These impulses rarely came without cause. More often than not, they surfaced in periods of disappointment: when I failed to meet my own expectations, or when I was on the receiving end of harsh judgement. At my lowest, the thought of ending my life would quietly intrude.
These feelings are not new to me. They trace back to my childhood, but it was in my early years working in overseas business that they reached their most acute form. I found myself thrust into an unfamiliar world, unequipped for the demands placed upon me. Criticism from superiors was not only frequent but, at times, cutting. There were moments when it felt less like guidance and more like ridicule. I sank.
Similar patterns re-emerged in my forties — twice. Both episodes were rooted not in a lack of effort or ability, but in a fundamental mismatch with those I reported to. One manager was relentlessly exacting, his thinking rigid and unforgiving. When I failed to align with his logic, he responded with public reprimands that chipped away at my confidence. I internalised his criticism, convincing myself that I was the problem.
The second case was different in detail but similar in consequence. Our professional backgrounds could not have been further apart: mine forged in overseas sales, his in corporate planning. Dialogue proved futile. My ideas were dismissed without consideration, and frustration mounted. Once again, I found myself blamed — and, more damagingly, blaming myself.
Then, one day, a question surfaced almost unexpectedly: was it truly all my fault?
It was a small shift, but a decisive one. For the first time, I stepped back and examined my experiences with a degree of detachment. What I saw was not a catalogue of personal failure, but a pattern of misplaced responsibility. I had been too quick to absorb blame, too willing to accept condemnation as truth.
That realisation marked a turning point.
Since then, I have learned to extend to myself the same understanding I once sought from others. I have come to recognise that self-respect is not indulgence but necessity — that I am, in the end, my most constant ally. No one else is better placed to understand my struggles or to offer the encouragement I need to continue.
This shift has not eliminated failure from my life, but it has transformed my relationship with it. I no longer see setbacks as proof of inadequacy, but as part of a broader, more complex reality. And should I encounter similar challenges again, I know this: I will not be undone by them in the same way.
