Three Landmark King of Laughter（三大王笑）-1

Sanma Akashiya, my all-time favourite, is set to celebrate his seventy-first birthday on July 1st. It really strikes me how genuinely fortunate I am to be his fan, as he is one of those rare entertainers who has hosted his own TV shows and fascinated audiences—including me—for such a long time. Looking back, I have seen a large number of entertainers, including comedians and musicians, take the nation by storm. One of them is Shinsuke Shimada, Sanma’s former ally and an old favourite of mine. He also anchored a number of TV shows in the past, but his momentum did not last as long as Sanma's. He retired from show business years ago and now enjoys his private life.

Furthermore, SMAP and Arashi, both of which captivated the nation and hosted several TV shows for a quarter-century, ultimately disbanded. In particular, Arashi’s break-up was an electric jolt to me; it was incredibly difficult to foresee, given their tight-knit bond. Nevertheless, they chose their separate paths.

As a result, these departures must not only have shocked their fans, but also created a subtle yet undeniable void in their lives. Fortunately, however, Sanma’s decades-long, high-energy performances have never left me feeling this sense of loss.

Once again, I can’t help but feel lucky to have been a fan of his for nearly fifty years—or three-fourths of my life. In other words, I have been able to continue watching his TV entertainment without interruption for all that time. This alone must be an incredible, Guinness World Records-worthy achievement.

To me, there is no denying that he stands as the greatest entertainer, and I do not expect anyone to take his place during my lifetime. That said, I do catch a glimpse of his "kingly" vibe in Koji Higashino and Akira Kawashima. Like my king, they excel at eliciting laughter through spontaneous banter with their fellow performers, as evidenced by Koji's Kansai-based comedy show Marco Pololi and Akira's LOVE it!. In short, I love laughter created from off-the-cuff chats.

Needless to say, they still don't quite match Sanma's heights. But these three comedians are my defining ‘Kings of Laughter’, or 王笑, who have shaped my life.

　大好きな明石家さんまさんが、もうすぐ7月1日の誕生日に71歳を迎えられます！さんまさんのファンのままでいられて、自分はなんて幸せ者なんだろうって、つくろうつくづく思うんです。だって、これほど長い間、ずっと自分の冠番組を持ち続けて、私を含めたたくさんのファンや視聴者を魅了し続けている芸能人なんて、本当に一握りしかいませんからね！

　振り返ってみると、これまでお笑い芸人やミュージシャンなど、日本中で大ブームを巻き起こしたたくさんのスターたちを見てきました。その一人が、かつてさんまさんの戦友でもあり、私のお気に入りでもあった島田紳助さんです。紳助さんも昔、数々の番組でMCを務めていましたが、その勢いはさんまさんのようには長くは続きませんでした。今は、芸能界を引退され、プライベートライフを楽しまれています。

　さらに、日本中を夢中にさせ、四半世紀にわたっていくつもの冠番組を引っ張ってきたSMAPや嵐も、最終的には解散してしまいました。特に嵐の解散は、私にとって電撃が走るほどの衝撃でした！メンバーの絆がとても固かっただけに、まさかそんな日が来るなんて夢にも思わなかったからです。それでも、彼らはそれぞれ新しい道を選んだんですよね。

　こうしたスターたちの別れは、ファンにショックを与えただけでなく、彼らの心にそっと、でも確実な「ぽっかりとした穴」を開けてしまったに違いありません。でもありがたいことに、さんまさんの何十年にもわたるハイエネルギーなパフォーマンスは、私にそんな寂しさを味わせたことが一度もないんです！

　もう一度言わせてください、およそ50年もの間、つまり私の人生の4分3のあいだ、ずっとさんまさんのファンでいられた私はなんてラッキーなんだろうって！言い換えれば、これまでの人生ずーーっと、途切れることなくさんまさんのテレビを楽しんできたわけです。これだけでも、ギネス世界記録に載ってもおかしくないくらい、ものすごい偉業だと思いませんか？

　当然のことながら、さんまさんは私の中で「史上最高のエンターテイナー」ですし、生きているうちに彼を超える存在が現れるとは到底思えません。
　
　とは言いつつも！実は東野幸治さんと川島明（麒麟）さんのお二人には、どこかさんまさんのような「王者の風格」を感じているんです。さんまさんと同じように、お二人は共演者との何気ない掛け合いから笑いを生み出すのが本当に天才的ですよね！東野さんの関西の番組『マルコポロリ！』や、川島さんの『ラヴィット！』を見ていると、それがよく分かります。要するに、私はあの「台本なしの、その場のノリから生まれるおしゃべりの笑い」が大好きなんです！

　もちろん、さんまさんの域に達するには、お二人ともまだまだ遠い道のりだとは思います。それでも、この3人の芸人さんは、私の人生を豊かに彩ってくれた、私だけの特別な「王笑」なのです！
