3 Books That Will Make You Think About Diversity
Hello everyone. I am Naseka.
I define myself as a philosopher and book reviewer.
I feel like the term "age of diversity" has become quite well-known,
but in reality,
how much has the world we live in
actually come to accept diversity?
Looking at the results of the recent House of Councillors election
or the political beliefs of the new Prime Minister,
I think it is hard to say unconditionally
that we have entered an age of diversity.
(I will not discuss the pros and cons of that here.)
So, I would like to introduce some recommended books
that are useful for deepening your own thoughts
on diversity once again.
My previous book recommendation is here ↓
My Hero Academia
Commonly known as "MHA," the anime is currently airing
its FINAL SEASON starting this autumn.
It is an era overflowing with people who have special abilities called "Quirks"
or who are called "heteromorphic."
While it is a battle series where villains who use their abilities
to satisfy their own desires cross paths with heroes who fight them to protect citizens,
it is also a thought-provoking work that makes you think
about values like individuality and diversity.
The anime is very appealing, but by reading the original work
and taking the time to think for yourself while you read,
you will be able to enjoy the story while also
deepening your contemplation on the values of the coming age.

・People who like ability battle series
・People who want to think about individuality and diversity
If the language is different, the world looks different
When discussing diversity in the real world,
the first topic that comes to mind
is probably the subject of "foreigners."
Whether it is Japan-first policies
or the pros and cons of accepting foreigners,
the debate is heating up
even in political discourse.
Whether we coexist or exclude,
the important thing is first
to "understand the other party," which is
something that surely leaves no room for doubt.
Through language, this book
makes us realize how the ways of seeing and thinking
that we take for granted
are not actually taken for granted at all.
If you learn that "even the concepts of 'front, back, left, and right'
are not universal to humanity," you will surely be surprised.
It is a very interesting book that teaches you the vastness of the world
and the diversity of values from a perspective you don't usually see.

・Those interested in the relationship and differences between language and concepts
・Those who want to break their own sense of what is "normal"
Convenience Store Woman
This is a novel that became famous
after winning the Akutagawa Prize
in 2016.
Many people have probably
at least heard the name.
The two books introduced earlier were
books that make you think about "diversity,"
but this one, conversely, is a work that
makes you think about "what is normal."
We often casually say
"This is normal, right?"
but we are completely unaware of how many people are included
or how many people are excluded
by that "normal."
When we are the ones saying it,
we don't feel anything,
but once we are on the receiving end,
we feel an indescribable sense of discomfort.
"You know, normal people
have a hobby of judging
people who aren't normal."
(Bunshun Bunko)
Sayaka Murata
A line spoken by a character in one scene
poses a sharp question to my daily self,
which wields "normal"
without any malice.
Even for me, who doesn't usually read novels,
it is an interesting and easy-to-read book
that I read all at once.

・Those who think about "what is normal"
・Those who are troubled by not being "normal"
・Those who think "I am normal"
