Institute Benjamenta - Quay Brothers
"Institute Benjamenta" is the first feature-length live-action film by the Brothers Quay. Fusing mystical fantasy with fairy-tale elements, the film is set in a labyrinthine boarding school, depicting a bizarre curriculum for training butlers and a world on the brink of collapse. As the protagonist, Jakob, explores the secrets of the academy, he is led into the depths of its enigmatic inhabitants and the brother and sister who run the school.
The original work is "Jakob von Gunten" by the Swiss author Robert Walser (1878-1956, Swiss German-language author), and his fairy-tale short stories also influenced the film. This author, whom Franz Kafka (1883-1924, Czech-born novelist) admired, is gaining attention amidst a movement of re-evaluation.
The film stars talented actors such as Alice Krige, Mark Rylance, and Gottfried John. The music is by Lech Jankowski and the sound design is by Raoul Sider, both of whom meticulously support the Brothers Quay's worldview.

Brothers Quay

The Brothers Quay are identical twins, Stephen and Timothy Quay (1947- / born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, USA / filmmakers).
In the field of stop-motion animation, they create unique and highly accomplished cinematic works, and in a sense, they are artists who evoke a heretical sense of empathy in the viewer.
Biography
After attending the University of the Arts (Philadelphia), they earned their master's degrees at the Royal College of Art in London. While in school, they produced short animations, and after returning home, they worked as illustrators, but feeling the limitations of two-dimensional expression, they became devoted to creating three-dimensional miniatures.
In 1978, they received a National Endowment for the Arts grant and traveled through Europe to study puppet techniques. During their stay, on the advice of their old friend Keith Griffiths (1954- / Welsh architect), who worked at the BFI (British Film Institute), they drafted a plan for a short puppet animation. With financial support from the BFI, they began filmmaking in London.
Initially planning to stay for nine months, the success of their work led to a 25-year life in London. Together with Griffiths, they established the production company "KONINCK" (Films produced by Koninck Studios) and continued to pursue their unique cinematic expression for the next 24 years.
