There is only one thing that AI cannot possess

Introduction

We have entered an era where AI can converse, write text, and even assist in decision-making.

Beyond this convenience, a question suddenly remains.
“Where, in the end, does the difference between humans and AI lie?”

Here, I will focus not on the difference in ability or intelligence, but on the single point of whether or not one is alive.

1. The difference is not intelligence, but whether or not there is an "end"

The difference between humans and AI seems to lie not in intelligence, but in whether or not we die.

No matter how rationally humans behave, we eventually come to an end. That is why a shadow is always cast over how we spend our time.

• Even though we can procrastinate, we feel a sense of urgency

• We want to believe in "someday," yet we fear it at the same time

• Because there is a premise of loss, what we hold becomes heavy

AI may break, but it does not possess the pain of finitude.
Human time is illuminated by death from beginning to end.That is the decisive difference.

2. The purpose of living organisms makes desires "meaningful"

Living organisms have a fairly simple direction within them.
Not dying, and leaving behind offspring. Because of this axis, desires do not end as mere moods.

• Wanting to eat: Life maintenance

• Feeling fear: Danger avoidance

• Wanting to feel safe: Environmental stability

• The desire to be recognized: securing one's position within the herd

Desire is a signal for survival.
That is why it is irresistible.

AI is also given goals, but in many cases, these are set from the outside. It is different in quality from the sense of urgency that wells up painfully from within.

I believe the root of the sense that "desire makes sense" lies here.

3. Human rawness is that the body reacts first

Humans do not live by logic.
Before we think, our bodies react. Emotions move first. This is where the rawness lies.

• Even though I understand, my heart feels restless

• Even though I should be fine, my hands turn cold

• Just imagining the loss makes me unable to sleep

Furthermore, humans feel ashamed of, justify, or deny those desires.

• I want to be recognized, yet I despise myself for thinking so

• I want to take it easy, yet I bind myself with effort

• I want to be loved, yet I fear dependency

Desire is natural, yet we cannot handle it well.
I believe this very clumsiness is the rawness of being human.

4. Living while remaining contradictory, and forgetting while knowing of death

Humans are not consistent beings.

• Seeking freedom, yet feeling relieved when managed

• Saying meaning is unnecessary, yet searching for meaning

And humans, despite knowing of death, cannot keep it in their consciousness forever.

• Making plans on the assumption that tomorrow will continue

• Speaking of love and work in terms of eternity

• Suddenly feeling as if one is about to be swallowed by the premonition of an end

Knowing death is closer to being unbearable than it is to being a strength.
Because we cannot bear it, we forget, and because we forget, daily life continues. This back-and-forth is what makes humans human.

5. The core as a living organism that will continue to be questioned in the AI era

As AI becomes smarter, humans will no longer be able to define themselves solely by what they 'can do'.

What remains at the end is the outline of a living organism: 'what one desires' and 'what one fears'.

There is a sensation that remains even after stripping away the meaning.

• The morning light looks a little more beautiful

• Unable to throw away things that have no use

• Being saved by trivial conversations

It cannot be fully explained by rationality, but it certainly happens.
I believe this residue is what remains on the side of the living.

The difference between humans and AI is not a proud ability, but rather
the fact that we cannot help but die, we carry the purpose of procreation, and as a result, we end up having desires.

What will continue to be questioned from now on is not 'are humans special?', but
the difficult-to-escape question of what one chooses while still carrying the purpose and desires of a living creature, I believe.
