If There Is No Free Will, Who Was "I"?
Introduction
There is no free will.
The moment I heard that,
a part of my chest went suddenly cold.
The things I have worked for.
The nights I spent lost in thought.
Even the feeling that I had "decided for myself."
If everything was decided from the beginning,
what is the "I" that remains?
But at the same time,
in this moment, the world truly touches me.
The light is dazzling, the sounds are near,
and my heart sways for no reason.
In place of the "I" that should have vanished,
something is certainly continuing to happen.

Chapter 1: The Feeling That There Is No Free Will
When I try to think,
the thought has already begun.
Before I decide to get angry,
my body is already tense.
The moment I think I have chosen,
the choice is already complete.
What is there
is more of a flow than a will.
Conditions overlap,
moods fluctuate,
memories emerge,
and as a result, "this" happens.
We are
only "intending" to choose,
giving names to what has already occurred.
The idea that there is no free will
simply means that you are not the one steering.
There is a sensation of holding the steering wheel.
But the car turns on its own.
Even so, the journey continues.
It does not stop.
You simply realize that the driver's seat is empty.
Chapter 2: "I" Cannot Be Found
Then, in that driver's seat,
who is sitting?
I search inside.
But all I find are
voices, images, emotions, and judgments.
The sentence "I think this."
The norm "I should be this way."
All of these appear and then vanish.
The "I" that should be at the center
is nowhere to be found.
The "it" that is searching
is also just another thought.
What I am saying here is
not that there is no personality.
The everyday "I" continues to function as it always has.
It is just that
the "core" that decides everything cannot be found.
It appears as if the "I" as an absolute subject
never existed in the first place.
What remains is
a sequence of events.
Thoughts arise,
emotions well up,
and the body reacts.
"I"
emerge afterward as a narrative
that bundles them together.
Chapter 3: Even So, the World Can Be Felt
Strangely enough,
even if "I" cannot be found,
the world does not become thin.
On the contrary,
sounds are vivid,
pain is direct,
and joy has no reason.
Feelings are
not anyone's possession.
They are simply happening.
Sadness appears,
relief spreads,
and fatigue fills the body.
Even without placing
a "subject that feels" there,
the experience is complete.
The world
does not need "I."
Even so,
through this body,
it certainly arises.
The boundaries become blurred.
The inside and outside melt a little.
Yet, within that ambiguity,
reality becomes, if anything, more certain.
Final Chapter: What remains is the fact that the world is happening
There is no free will.
Therefore, there is no 'I' either.
What these words are breaking is not
existence.
It is the explanation.
The story that 'I choose, I decide, and I move the world' quietly falls away.
Even so, the morning comes.
Sensations arise.
Relationships continue, and influences remain.
There is no center.
Yet, it is not a void.
The world, as this body and this moment, is simply continuing to happen.
Even if you hold onto nothing, and even if you are no one, life is still certainly here.
