Common Traits of People with an 'Outdated Intellectual OS': AI Book Review of 'Reading Comprehension is the Ultimate Intelligence'
How many pieces of information did you encounter today?
Social media timelines, news on LINE, work emails, recommended YouTube videos... We are exposed to a vast wave of information every day. And among it, cleverly planted fake news and plausible-sounding conspiracy theories are mixed in.
Why do so many people, regardless of their educational background or knowledge level, get deceived by misinformation?
One answer to that is provided by Takuro Yamaguchi's book, 'Reading Comprehension is the Ultimate Intelligence'. According to this book, reading comprehension is not just a 'skill for reading text,' but an 'intellectual OS' that governs human thought and action. If this OS remains outdated, no matter what knowledge you install, you will end up infected by the virus of misinformation.
■ Common traits of people deceived by misinformation: Being misled by the 'branches and leaves'
Conspiracy theories and fake news share a common characteristic. They are armed with 'plausible details'.
'According to research from XX University,' 'According to testimony from a government official,' 'Look at this photo'—when specific details pile up, people think, 'If it's this detailed, it must be true.'
However, the book uses the analogy of a tree to describe text and information, and warns us as follows.
Information has a 'trunk (essence/argument)' and 'branches and leaves (specific examples/supplements).' Do not be misled by the 99% of branches and leaves; identify the 1% that is the trunk.
Creators of misinformation are professionals at skillfully growing these 'branches and leaves.' While the reader is busy verifying the details, the 'trunk'—the argument—becomes an established fact before they know it. This is one of the mechanisms behind the spread of misinformation.
■ Two 'questions' to repel misinformation
So, how can we identify the 'trunk'?
The weapon presented by this book is two surprisingly simple questions.
1. 'Why?' Dig deeper into superficial claims by asking, 'Why does it happen?' By tracing the chain of cause and effect, you can notice logical flaws or leaps.
2. 'In the first place?' Re-examine the premises of the argument. By returning to the starting point and asking, 'In the first place, is that source reliable?' or 'In the first place, is this definition correct?', arguments built on sand will crumble away.
Most conspiracy theories cannot withstand this 'In the first place?' question. Just by asking, 'In the first place, why is this 'truth' only spreading on social media and not in the mainstream media?', many conspiracy theories are left unable to provide an explanation.
■ The greatest enemy is the 'illusion of understanding'
This is the point in the book that I felt was the most important.
The trap of the 'illusion of understanding' is the greatest enemy of reading comprehension.
This is exactly the psychology of people who are deceived by misinformation.
The moment people think, 'I get it!', they stop thinking any further. They see information flowing through social media and feel satisfied, thinking, 'I see, so that's what it was!' However, that 'feeling of understanding' is exactly what is dangerous.
Conspiracy theories explain complex realities with simple, clear stories. That is precisely why it is easy to get that 'sense of understanding.' But reality is not that simple.
True reading comprehension is the ability to constantly doubt oneself, asking, 'Am I just pretending to understand?'
■ Critical Reading: Distinguishing 'Facts' from 'Opinions'
The core of the 'deep reading comprehension' recommended by this book is critical thinking that does not take information at face value.
Specifically, keep questions like these in mind at all times.
'Is that an objective fact, or the author's opinion?'
'Is the source of the data reliable?'
'Is there a leap in logic?'
'Does the sender have a position-based agenda (conflicts of interest)?'
The author recommends asking yourself, 'That is just your personal opinion, isn't it?'
This is the fundamental action of fact-checking. Before reacting to flashy claims or emotional incitement, take a step back and confirm, 'Is this a fact or an opinion?' Having this buffer alone significantly increases your resistance to misinformation.
■ Update Your 'Intellectual OS'
The most impressive metaphor in this book is the part where reading comprehension is compared to an 'intellectual OS.'
If a PC's OS is outdated, the latest apps won't run. Similarly, if your reading comprehension is immature, no knowledge or skill will function properly.
This applies directly to dealing with misinformation as well.
No matter how many techniques (apps) you learn, such as 'how to spot conspiracy theories' or 'countermeasures against fake news,' if the foundational reading comprehension (OS) is fragile, you cannot compete with clever misinformation.
Conversely, if you strengthen your OS—your reading comprehension—your immunity to all information increases. It is not a 'vaccine' for a specific piece of misinformation, but rather the strengthening of the 'immune system' itself, which can handle even unknown misinformation.
■ To Survive the Age of Information Floods
We are living in the era with the most information saturation in human history.
AI generates massive amounts of content, and social media spreads information instantly. Among it, truth, intentional misinformation, and unintentional misinformation are all mixed together.
What you need to swim through this era without drowning is not 'speed reading.' Processing information at high speed is meaningless if you are just taking in a massive amount of garbage.
What is needed is the 'technique to grasp the 1% of essence' advocated by this book.
Discard 99% of the noise and see through to the truth in the remaining 1%. That is the ultimate skill for surviving the era of fake news.
