Project notes

[edit]

I just created this wikiproject, after several months of contemplating doing so. I hope everyone working on hurricane articles will get involved. I went ahead and wrote a bunch of guidelines, basically based on current practices...naturally since this is something I just wrote it doesn't necessarily represent community consensus and needs to be discussed. That discussion should probably go here for now...although eventually we may make these pages a little more structured. For a general TODO list, see the "tasks" item on the project page. Discussion

[edit]

I feel that both of the above articles are nearly finished. They are both awaiting GA reviews, but assuming there are no issues, I will nominate both of them to featured article status in the near future. We've had A-class in the past, as a project review status, but I think it could be easier if users added the articles they intend to take to FA status in the future. This can help notify other users if they want to help out. Users should be proactive and make the small changes (especially typos), as well as point out what needs to be done on the talk page (if anything). There are a lot of pretty good articles in the project, and I think it would be better to have more of them featured, provided they are either of moderate importance, or help to complete an important topic. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:55, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I will try to get all 5 major ATL2024 hurricanes to FA. (Beryl, Debby, Helene, Milton, Rafael) GiftedIceCream 15:35, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
It’s pretty far off now but Cyclone Hudhud would be a good first FA. I think I can still expand it like 1.5-2x in some parts. HurricaneZetaC 15:48, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@GiftedIceCream and HurricaneZeta: when either of you are considering going for FA and would like a review beforehand, let me know. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:32, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Hurricanehink I could take a review for Hurricane Rafael. GiftedIceCream 15:29, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@GiftedIceCream: let me know after it passes GAN. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:43, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I added Carla, due to the extensive work recently done by MCRPY22 (talk · contribs). The article isn't done yet, and there are a few things still needed, but it's almost FAC-able, which should be the purpose of this section. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:17, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

1900 Galveston hurricane is also close. The comments on its 2019 FAC should be easy to address, for such an important article. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 18:45, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I also added 1928 Okeechobee hurricane and Hurricane Igor, both of which garnered some support for their most recent FAC runs. Hurricane Audrey also has had a lot of work done by TheAustinMan (talk · contribs), and looks like close to being ready. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:35, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Hurricane Frances/archive1 - Hurricane Frances is on FAC right now. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:58, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

It passed. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 18:11, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Jeanne is next on FAC. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:38, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I hope JCMLuis doesn't mind me adding Typhoon Yutu, which looks close to FAC (and was retired). They recently made edits, and there was already a peer review on the talk page (that I did). I think prioritizing featured/otherwise important articles would be a good area of focus for FAC. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:01, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I also added 1932 Abaco hurricane, which CapeVerdeWave wants to take to FAC. That'll be useful toward the future featured topic of Atlantic Category 5 hurricanes. Mehopes that we're gonna have an FA fall (in addition to whatever featured lists that might arise, pinging Dylan620 to make sure they know about the project featured queue, we're working on getting a red carpet and a press corps.) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:19, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
To follow up @Hurricanehink and Hurricanehink mobile:, I am doing the FAC draft for the 1932 hurricane in a sandbox of mine, where big upgrades are still formative. Once done, I plan to have the draft merged with or copied into the main article. Anyone who wants to help is free to do so; this will be my first FAC and hopefully a deserving FA down the line. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 19:24, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate the heads up, Hurricanehink. To be honest, I'm kind of booked right now – I'm already working on getting Believe (Staind song) and eventually Punching the Clown (album) to FAC, there are a couple drafts I want to wrap up before they time out (again), and I already promised another user I'd help out with Christmas music articles during the upcoming holiday season. I'll see if I can contribute in between, though, and I do have plenty of timelines in the queue for FLC! I will say this – I know it's not the highest priority, but I would love to see Hurricane Franklin (2023) featured someday. One of the best days I've had in the last few years was centered around watching the waves from Franklin crash against the rocky Cape Ann shores. Dylan620 (he/they/she • talk • edits) 23:07, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I misread this when I posted my reply last night (earlier tonight?). Thank you for making me and the timelines feel included :,,) I've added a separate column for prospective FL candidates; right now it's just the timelines I've worked on over the last couple months in the rough order in which I plan to nominate them, but other editors are of course more than welcome to add lists they would like to get to FL. How do you convert IBTrACS data to HURDAT format?

[edit]

The IBTrACS website is in a table format, which takes a long time to copy all of them and turn them into HURDAT format. However, I saw track maps using IBTrACS data and they all use HURDAT. I heard that there is a python code for it but I have no other information on it. Let's (draw)!🖊 06:40, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

NaTyphoon can convert table to ATCF and vise versa, which then can be converted much easily into HURDAT. Not sure if the table format is exactly IBTRACS though. Dragonzgikil (talk) 20:49, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Can you give me the link? Let's (draw)!🖊 08:44, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
https://www.natyphoon.top/website/nrlToB-deck.htm, this is the nrl (ibtracs) table format to atcf, then you might need a seperate hurdat converter that i dont know of. Dragonzgikil (talk) 14:09, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
That turns b-deck into table, not the other way around. Let's (draw)!🖊 15:12, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

1971-75 Atlantic hurricane season completed

[edit]

Although the page of updates hasn't been released yet, HURDAT has been updated. All of the seasons and storm articles will need to be updated. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:06, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

We won't be able to update the met history sections until the actual report thing is published, but we can update the tracks, update the ACE stuff, change categories and navigation templates for storms that changed categories, and finally scrub Edith from anything involving the term "category 5." MCRPY22 (talk) 22:05, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I notice they include the Pacific portion of Hurricane Irene–Olivia but not Fifi-Orleans, which makes me think that they decided they were separate after all. Will wait until the full analysis is released to be sure, but we might have to change the article to “Hurricanes Fifi and Orlene” or strip out Orlene entirely depending on what the reanalysis shows. MCRPY22 (talk) 15:24, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It might be worth checking if there was any change on Orlene's dataon EPAC's HURDAT, that might offer some more clues about their reanalysis. ABC paulista (talk) 22:17, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looks like it's unchanged, unlike Olivia. I'd rather not jump the gun though, hopefully they mention explicitly if and why they consider them two separate storms now in the report. MCRPY22 (talk) 02:35, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Metadata with all reasoning and such is up, have fun everyone! MCRPY22 (talk) 21:26, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to establish a local consensus on using "Violent typhoon" instead of "Super typhoon" in typhoon articles

[edit]

See Talk:2026_Pacific_typhoon_season#We_should_start_adopting_“Violent_Typhoon”_in_standalone_typhoon_articles_instead_of_using_“Super_Typhoon”. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:30, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Since the above proposal has a broad consensus, I'd like to open the discussion about changing the infobox used in typhoon seasons to remove "super typhoons" in favor of "violent typhoons". ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:15, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps using the very strong typhoon category instead? It's more analogous to the usage of major hurricanes in the Atlantic and East Pacific. Then again, the Australian region and South Pacific don't use anything higher than severe tropical cyclone, and the Indian Ocean basins list every category... – atomic𓅊7732 04:55, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
According to JMA, violent typhoons are stronger than very strong typhoons (see here). Guythatlikeshorses2talk 06:06, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposed new article: List of the longest-lasting tropical cyclones

[edit]

Most tropical cyclones last between 4 to 7 days. I suggest a cut off for two weeks. That way the list can be worldwide. It could be a giant sortable table, or split by basins, but some storms were in two basins. I still think the list would be useful. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 02:07, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Strong support: There are many storms that had a lifespan of more than one week. Listing them there, helps distinguish what storms lasted the longest.
Guythatlikeshorses2talk 06:08, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Strong support as I had a difficult time finding most (unless its's something that caught my attention, Freddy 2023 for example). ~2026-50354-25 (talk) 10:51, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support - per everyone else. this shouldve been article awhile ago, ZonResearcher (talk) 12:57, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support. With this on the 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane, this would be very useful. However, as I have brought up here, there appear to be two different ways to measure the duration of a tropical cyclone. We'll have to decide which way. Nibnab43637 (talk) 10:15, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Am I ok to create Draft:List of the longest-lasting tropical cyclones? Nibnab43637 (talk) 17:07, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Gopher it, as they say. Also, you should only include the time when a system was a (sub)tropical cyclone. Extratropical/remnant low/tropical wave don't count, for storms like Nolo. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:29, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

First off, we need to get some kind of sourcing on the average length of tropical cyclones. Also, does anyone have input whether to do it as one big table, or split by basin? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:44, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Per basin, but also perhaps list the top 5 globally in a table at the end. MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 21:07, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
But some of the longest lasting storms (John, Freddy, Rewa) were in multiple basins. Do you only count the time in their respective basins? That's why I suggested just listing every storm that lasted two weeks. Unless you think a specific cutoff, like a top 10 for each basin, is better. We still have the sourcing problem of needing sources discussing tropical cyclone longevity (the average), beyond just Freddy/John/Ginger. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:25, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
2 weeks is too short for me. Half of the hurricanes here don't seem that notable for their duration. I'd prefer something longer like 20 days. Nibnab43637 (talk) 10:19, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Kind of agree, yet I think that more than 2 weeks are quite enough. Not saying your thoughts are bad, though ~2026-50354-25 (talk) 10:28, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
To the above TA, would you mind logging into your account? Or, if you haven’t made a user name, you should consider making one, since you’re active in talk page discussions. It’s difficult to build consensus with regular editors if one of them is a TA (since they change so often). And to Nibnab, fair, two weeks probably isn’t enough. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 17:18, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

we should start implementing acculmated cyclone energy into pacific typhoon & southern hemisphere tropical cyclone seasons infobox

[edit]

ive noticed that many pacific typhoon seasons are lacking information about total ACE, with the exception of the 1989, most of the seasons during the 90s excluding 1990, and 2000-2006 in which ACE stopped being implemented in the 2007 pacific typhoon seasons, excluding the extremes like the 2012, 2013, and 2015 seasons (this also goes for the southern hemisphere basins as well mind you). about a few months ago I did attempt to add the ACE parameter to the 2026 wpac typhoon seasons but was immediately reverted thus is the reason why I made this discussion. I'm going to link some websites where ACE can be tracked in real time instead of being manually calculated.

https://triple-a-tropics.com/

https://tropical.atmos.colostate.edu/Realtime/

https://climatlas.com/tropical/ (you can also view the amount of ACE every cyclone of each basin has produced during certain season) ZonResearcher (talk) 13:28, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@ZonResearcher: do any of these websites use JMA data? That’s been the problem with adding ACE for WPAC. The second source explicitly uses JTWC, so we can’t use that. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 17:25, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
wouldnt using JMA data, which has much lower windspeeds due to being 10-min, significantly skew the numbers down and make comparisons near-impossible? Or would we convert them to 1-min before doing the calculations? OneFortyTwoK (talk) 18:39, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Cyclonicwx also has ACE graphs back to the 70s using IBTrACS data https://cyclonicwx.com/ OneFortyTwoK (talk) 18:36, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
back to the 50s i mean OneFortyTwoK (talk) 18:37, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
IBTRACS also uses JTWC. The point is comparing seasons to each other, not basins, so JMA data is preferred since they’re the official RSMC. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 19:03, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Should the year be included in the short description of certain articles?

[edit]

Including the year in the short description is redundant and unnecessary, as the title itself already contains the year.

For an article with the title Hurricane X (year), I support the following changes to the short description:

−
Category Y (basin) hurricane in (year)
+
Category Y (basin) hurricane

GiftedIceCream 16:53, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yea that makes sense. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 17:20, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposed article: List of tropical cyclones that crossed the International Date Line

[edit]

I noticed that we have storms like Nolo and John that crossed the International Date Line, but we haven't made an article about those type of storms. Guythatlikeshorses2talk 02:18, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Guythatlikeshorses2: My feeling is that it wouldn’t be that notable, as you would pretty much have to include every system that makes landfall on Fiji, which straddles the IDL.Jason Rees (talk) 08:52, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, this proposal sounds more like WP:SYNTH than a viable article. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 15:16, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
The IDL is not a physical entity versus something that crossed basins. I wouldn't object if there's anything more solid to such a designation as we have a list of tropical cyclones near the Equator but that's due to the Coriolis effect. – The Grid (talk) 20:15, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Little thing I've created

[edit]

So I've created this massive table that shows every single North Atlantic tropical cyclone with a track map on a season article, up to 2023 when the change happened. Now that I've finished the Atlantic, I'm ready to show it to other people. I know that this exists, but that is not up to date and harder to read. I think what I've made is a clear and visual way to see what tracks have the new colours versus the old ones. Feel free to suggest any changes! I'm going to do the Eastern Pacific next. Nibnab43637 (talk) 17:05, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Template request - adding violent typhoons to Template:Infobox tropical cyclone season

[edit]

There is longstanding agreement that the Template:Infobox tropical cyclone season should have "violent typhoons", which is the highest category used by the JMA. As it's used on over 800 different articles, this needs to be handled by someone who knows how to edit it. It currently supports "super", as in super typhoons, used by the JTWC, but the preference is to use the RSMC in each basin. Are there any takers? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:44, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
