Administrators' newsletter – May 2026
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2026).

Interface administrator changes
- Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
- The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).
- The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
- Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
- Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
- The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.
- The May 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19. The call for candidates ends May 5.
- The 2026 Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is scheduled to run from April 25 to June 1. Candidacy submissions close on May 10.
- A new noticeboard for non-urgent, batch page protection requests has been created, primarily for the enforcement of contentious topic restrictions.
Johnny Au May 2026 Administrator Elections
[edit]I would like to have you be my nominator. Thanks. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:39, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
- To co-nominate me, all you have to do is to post on my candidacy page. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 04:06, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
Canterbury Tail, I decided to withdraw from the May 2026 Admin Election as I felt I wasn't ready yet. I had to admit that I have used LLMs to write much of my candidacy. I feel that I need much more guidance so I can be prepared for the October 2026 Admin Election. I will use my own words by then, given that I made so many great edits without LLMs on the articles themselves. My weaknesses are that I would need to do more admin-adjacent tasks alongside using WP:AIV, WP:RPP, and WP:UAA. I would need to familiarize myself with the deletion process. Once you feel I am ready, you can nominate me for the October 2026 election. Thanks. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 21:04, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- October would actually be too soon. I would need more time. I will let you know once I feel that I am ready. But yes happy to help in the future. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:27, 14 May 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry I haven't responded or done anything else, I started a new job this week and don't have the time I used to right now. Canterbury Tail talk 00:32, 14 May 2026 (UTC)
Sockpuppetry? Hounding?
[edit]Hi there. You made this edit a couple of weeks ago, which I appreciate. Could you take a look at these two accounts - Special:Contributions/~2026-27237-80 and Special:Contributions/Mauravian. Am I seeing the same thing here? Two brand new accounts which have only reverted my edits. // Hippo43 (talk) 03:56, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- Maybeeeee. Not enough evidence unfortunately and its only 1 article. Canterbury Tail talk 12:22, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks. What did you notice in the previous case? I'm not sure how this works. // Hippo43 (talk) 17:14, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- Well it's a different IP and it's only on the one article, not reverting you on your previous articles where they were mass reverting you. Canterbury Tail talk 17:15, 9 May 2026 (UTC)

Definite article
[edit]You left a comment on my talk page and reverted two of my edits regarding definite articles. While I am thankful for you making me aware, your chain of reasoning, however, appeared inconsistent to me. Would you be so kind and resolve the inconsistency? Village
[edit]While village is a common English word is has different connotations in different parts of the world. In addition there are many hundreds, possibly thousands, of articles where editors have thought it necessary to provide a link. In nearly 16 years of editing this is the first time I have come across a complaint about its usage. Perhaps this ought to be discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography? Murgatroyd49 (talk) 15:28, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
- A generic link to the article village is not helpful for anyone. It's a pure MOS usage item. Now if there is a specific thing about villages in the UK that may need to be explained to readers for understanding sure (as long as it doesn't go against EASTEREGG), but it's a basic dictionary word as used. Canterbury Tail talk 15:57, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
- The section in the article describing villages in the UK, does a fairly good job of explaining the pecularities of the term in a British context. Perhaps the link ought to be to Village#United Kingdom. If you think the purist approach is better then you have one hell of a job on your hands. Then there is Hamlet, Town and City to sort out. As I say, given this will have far-reaching effects, it should really be discussed more widely first. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 16:24, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
- The edit is compliant with the Infobox instructions which specifically states to not link it, so linking it is actually a problem on two areas now (infobox instructions and MOS:OVERLINK.) Just unlinked as I came across it. And a Wikiproject isn't an important location, as they don't have authority over the MOS or any pages in fact. Consensus is actually for no link, no consensus has been established to link it. Canterbury Tail talk 19:11, 25 May 2026 (UTC)

Ethnoscience navbox
[edit]Hi Canterbury Tail. Ethnoastronomy redirects to a subheading of Archaeoastronomy. The former does appear in {{Ethnoscience}}. wound theology◈ 22:55, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
- Okay, then the template should include Archaeoastronomy and not Ethnoastronomy as redirects shouldn't be used in templates as per WP:BRINT. Canterbury Tail talk 23:14, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
- It currently links to Ethnoscience but strictly speaking it actually just lists "Astronomy" without a prefix. wound theology◈ 23:17, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – June 2026
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2026).

- Following an RfC, the "persistent usage of large language models" has been included as a common reason for a block.
- Mandatory 2FA for bureaucrats: Bureaucrats without two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled have already lost access to their advanced rights on 26 May. Those who do not enable 2FA may be automatically removed from the groups in mid-June 2026, and from that point onward, new members must have 2FA enabled before they can be added. (T423119, T423120)

[edit]The digital sribe (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (who you p-blocked from Michelle Fairley}} is now spreading their disruption elsewhere, specifically repeatedly trying to claim that the alleged perpetrator of the recent stabbing attack in Belfast is an illegal immigrant, which obviously isn't true at all. Archaeoastronomy mooc
[edit]Some students signalled me that my course is not linked in wikipedia and you deleted it. May I ask you the reason? is There a rule against moocs on Wikipedia I am not aware of? I stress that The audit course is completely free of charge, unless enrolling to the certificate version. Thanks G Magli ~2026-37379-00 (talk) 16:56, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- 1) you shouldn't be adding your own course, that's a conflict of interest. 2) External links cannot contain any links that require someone to sign in, create an account or subscribe, no matter if it's free or not, as per WP:ELNO #6. Also I have no idea what an MOOC is. Canterbury Tail talk 18:33, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi I hardly understand how promoting -yes, my own - scientific discipline for free can be a conflict of interest. In any case, MOOCs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_open_online_course are a important way to open learning but yes, require an account for each learner. However, a collection of the lessons is avaliable as a youtube playlist

Second opinion
[edit]Just after a second opinion here… I reverted a bold move of Gillette–Campbell County Airport yesterday as a cursory look at Google showed me that COMMONNAME didn’t appear to have been met. The editor then opened a technical move request and it was moved back again… I know how disruptive move wars are, so how can I stop that happening? Danners430 tweaks made 07:29, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Not sure on that one, it is definitely what the airport is called now. However looking at the talks it seems that you and the second mover have settled on it. I'd just start a conversation on the talk page for the airport. Canterbury Tail talk 15:27, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Well, the second mover did so as a result of a technical request, so I've no hard feelings there really - I'm just more a little miffed that the original mover tried to move it again through the back door… or am I being a little unfair there? Danners430 tweaks made 15:29, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Something very tangentially related… at what point does discussion become bludgeoning? I’m always extremely cautious about accusing other editors… but the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nigeria Airways Flight 357 prompted me to mention the policy for the first time in a discussion… I do hope I’m not being overzealous? Danners430 tweaks made 21:04, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- I think your comment there is perfectly fine. It brings the matter to attention, without being accusatory. Canterbury Tail talk 21:44, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

Question
[edit]I'm the Airbus infobox title guy, would the Soviet aircraft designations (Il, An, Tu, Be, Su) also fall under the simple model convention like A320? That is to say, should I go add the manufacturer to those Soviet titles? Relton66 (talk) 23:10, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
- I would imagine so. Unless they have a name after like Foxbat, etc. Canterbury Tail talk 00:24, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
United Airlines
[edit]Hi. I reverted your good-faith edit on the United incident because while we are not a news site, we are also not United's PR agency. There are multiple news reports on the incident, and it includes a report from outside the U.S., meaning the incident is notable enough. Why did you give me a ban for editing Belfast international airport for the route to Aberdeen with easyJet! Idiot! ~2026-41386-17 (talk) 20:42, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Something odd is going on
[edit]Wonder if you could have a look at this set of brand new accounts that have all started editing airport pages in the last day or two... May well be absolutely nothing, but something feels off, as they're all brand new, all are editing in the same area, and all had issues with sourcing... SYNTH discussion at RSN
[edit]Hiya, was it yourself that was at the RSN discussion around using booking engines and other such pages as sources for routes, labelling them as WP:SYNTH? I just can't recall who it was... Danners430 tweaks made 19:08, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
- I don't think it was me. I'm perfectly fine using the airline source as lets face it, they know best. Not necessarily third party booking engines, but the airlines own one. If an airline can book a route, it's fair to say it's real, and since we're based on verifiability not truth that's sufficient in my view. Canterbury Tail talk 19:13, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

H.P. Lovecraft's Views
[edit]Hi, Canterbury. Again, I just wanted to tell you that many of Lovecraft's views are seen widely today as racist. Now, I'm not saying that his views were never seen as racist then, in fact I agree that he was always viewed as a racist even during his lifetime. However, I'm just stating that they're seen as even more racist today because obviously society has changed since then. Thanks. SilkDirksoak2ek3 02:43, 19 September 2026 (UTC)
- They were always racist. Your edits are are seemingly trying to tone down the fact that he was a racist. He was racist then. He would be racist today. Saying they're widely seen as racist today is trying to tone down that fact. We say what the sources say, not our own opinions, and the sources are clear he was racist. Anyway you made the edit, you were reverted, as per the policies and guidelines you now need to take it to the talk page of the article and obtain consensus for your edits. You don't edit war to reinsert your edit. You try and obtain consensus. Canterbury Tail talk 02:53, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

Treat me like a humsn
[edit]Treat me like a human and not a problem yo be dealt with. You have waded in heavy handed and taken one users side. You have not behaved evenhandedly. You only placed a warning in my page and there was no 3rr violation. All I ask is you treat everyone fairly and not treat me as a problem to be dealt with.
I am happy to chat with you. Just don’t come in guns blazing. I dont like cricket I love it (talk) 15:49, 1 October 2026 (UTC)
- Yes I'm treating you like a problem to be dealt with, that's my role. You are the one ignoring consensus. You are the one edit warring to get your preferred version. You are the one pulling strange rules out of nowhere and saying everyone else is wrong. I make no claims on what is correct, and I don't care. I only care about avoiding disruption and you're causing disruption. And note 3RR warnings are placed BEFORE you violate it. No one said you violated it, but also be aware that 3rr is not a bright line. You're edit warring. You know you're edit warring (if you don't that's another issue.) You've been blocked multiple times for disruptive edit warring. Unless you stop that and actually build consensus and treat others like they are humans that know what they're talking about (which you're not), you will be blocked. Let's make that quite clear. Let's see what assuming good faith you have done?
- "The link you provided in the edit summary is frankly insulting to the intelligence of users of Wikipedia."
- "No I am not engaging I a side show to concede that you can override reliable verifiable sources with speculation and original research. With consensus being used to justify such nonsense. Your position would allow anything in Wikipedia if people agreed to it under the guise of consensus, even if policy of Wikipedia and the law, such as defamation, said otherwise. If you have sources supporting your position, provide them. Otherwise you are disrupting Wikipedia by insisting on your own original research over reliable verifiable sources. In short I reject the game you are engaging in ‘of demand a discussion based on a vague and weird notion that consensus overrides reliable verifiable sources’. Consensus does not override."
- Oh look more edit warring
- "I’m sorry mate, but you are just wrong. You are being unreasonable in your interpretation and taking provisions in isolation, not as a whole, which leads you to a perverse outcome."
- "Nonsense. You are being obstructive by demanding ‘a consensus’ to magically override or weirdly affirm the facts as supported by reliable sources. Absolute nonsense carry on."
- And if you do any reversions whatsoever of people going forward, you will be blocked. And note, this will be an indefinite block. Canterbury Tail talk 16:02, 1 October 2026 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – October 2026
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2026).

- Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
- Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
- The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.
- Interface administrators no longer need to specify the
ResourceLoaderoption in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded throughResourceLoader. (T298199) - The
list=abusefiltersAPI module now supportsformatversion=2and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, theactionsproperty is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)
- The arbitration case Gun control 2 has been closed.
- Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.
- The October 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from September 29 to October 19. The call for candidates ends October 5.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2026 Arbitration Committee elections is opened and closes on 8 October.
- The Good Article Nominations backlog drive has begun and is scheduled to end on November 3.
