Joseon Cybernation

[edit]

Following the merge discussion for Joseon Cybernation which resulted in the page being merged back into Andrew Lee (entrepreneur), I removed the mention of Joseon from this page because it's not WP:DUE to call out by name an entity that isn't notable enough for an article because the "entity" is really just one guy. I received "thanks" from other editors for that edit, so I'm confident it was the right call. User:Nice4What has since reverted it, telling me to use the talk page instead. Now that we're at the talk page, could you help me understand why this material should be included?  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 17:54, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Regardless of opinion, it’s still an entity recognized by a UN member. It should at the very least get a mention in some regard. ~2026-34820-55 (talk) 18:06, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I believe this material should be included as a reader familiar with the Joseon Cybernation might want to know why it is excluded from the list; for convenience and to avoid confusion, maintaining two sentences stating that it was excluded is sufficient. Antigua and Barbuda still maintains diplomatic relations with it, so at the end of the day the entity is not entirely niche/trivial/not notable. If the Joseon Cybernation is excluded, it would benefit our readers to explain why rather than have them guess!
You keep calling Joseon a micronation but I've yet to see a source calling it as such, so it wouldn't fall under the existing "micronation" exclusion (rather, micronations are distinguished by their lack of recognition). Also, wouldn't WP:UNDUE be including Joseon in the list, whereas explaining its exclusion is the majority viewpoint? Nice4What (talk · contribs) ♥ 18:08, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The reason why Joseon is not included in the list isn't due weight, it's because the Joseon Cybernation is not a state at all, it's a person and/or his website. Including it in this list would be misinformation. Mentioning the Joseon Cybernation is not due because the Joseon Cybernation is not notable, and notability determines what is WP:DUE. The Joseon Cybernation article was merged because there are no sources that distinguish between the "nation" and the one guy. There is not due weight to list a single guy as an "excluded entity."  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 18:46, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it would be best to simply have a blanket note explaining that all cybernations are excluded. The Joseon Cybernation is currently the only one with any level of notability, but there are almost certainly going to be more in the future. TheLegendofGanon (talk) 21:09, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
This seems a bit unnecessary since "cybernation" isn't a real word and we shouldn't need to explicitly spell out that websites are not sovereign and neither are individual persons. Cybernation is a redirect to Lyndon B. Johnson's "Triple Revolution" memorandum, nothing close to the way that term is being used here. Joseon is the only one with any level of notability, and Joseon isn't notable.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 21:24, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I would not necessarily disagree with this proposal, but I believe most other cybernations qualify as micronations due to their lack of recognition / trivial claims. Joseon Cybernation differs because of its recognition from a UN member state. It is simplest to just name it. Nice4What (talk · contribs) ♥ 22:18, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
What I am reading is that cyber states cannot exist under international law, hence (suggested) recognition by a UN member state is as relevant an evidence to its existence as a UN member state declaring existence of a flying horse (or other mythical creature). Error in Recent Edits

[edit]

Right now, the part on Abkhazia and the part on Northern Cyprus seem to have merged, with the Name through Status being Abkhazia's and the Other Claimants through Further Information being Northern Cyprus's. The missing information is now in citation 93. Looking at the edits, I'm guessing what happened was that when someone was updating a citation in the second most recent edit, they made a mistake with the curly brackets or something and the area in between ended up getting read as part of the citation. Petition for a new section for historical states recognized by at least one UN member state

[edit]

This would allow listing historical entities (that no longer exist) with the same emphasis on recognition by UN member states, limiting the time frame to 1945 and later at the same time. While List of historical unrecognized states exists, its scope is vague and much more different; a requirement to have at least some level of recognition from widely-recognized ones in this case would also mark the difference between "with limited recognition" and "unrecognized".

Some obvious examples:

  • the 4 Bantustan homelands formed and recognized by South Africa
  • the 5 separatist states from Ukraine since 2014 with various level of recognition from Russia and allied states before the eventual annexations

It would probably be easier to divide up the historical list, rather than to incorporate history into a current list. CMD (talk) 09:10, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

why was south korea removed

[edit]

as far as i can remember north korea doesn't recognise south korea, and i could never find any evidence to suggest Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic Recognises south korea either? ~2026-45872-31 (talk) 14:43, 22 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

North Korea renounced its claim and wrote into its constitution that South Korea was a bordering state. I don't think the SADR has even been relevant to the Koreas. CMD (talk) 01:14, 23 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

States not recognized by Holy See

[edit]

Mentioned here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_relations_of_the_Holy_See ~2026-37212-72 (talk) 07:24, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The assertion on that page is unsourced. CMD (talk) 08:15, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's also a very suspect list. Brunei? Vietnam? My guess is someone's conflated lack of relations with lack of recognition.
Anyway, even if it were totally true and accurate, it wouldn't affect this page because the Holy See isn't a UN member. TheLegendofGanon (talk) 12:03, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update SADR

[edit]

According to its separated article, the number of countries who recognize Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic has currently dropped to 33, with 49 countries either retracted or suspended recognition. Bar.Yardeni202 (talk) 16:20, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
