Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 5 is officially here. It was announced alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 at the Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea, and it's all set to take on the Moto Razr+ in the U.S. market. It's the first Galaxy Z Flip phone in years that looks different from its predecessor. Samsung had left the door open for lots of improvement last year, and it's now time to see if it managed to deliver a good clamshell model worthy of a spot in our collection of the best phones. We have all the official details now, so here's everything you need to know about the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Pricing, availability, and specs
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is now up for pre-orders in a bunch of regions, including the U.S. Samsung hasn't increased the price this year, which means it carries the same $1,000 starting price as the previous-gen model. You get to pick between the 256GB and 512GB variants in the U.S., both of which have 8GB of RAM.

Design
The first thing you'll notice about the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is that it looks quite different from the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The front half of the clamshell model that sports a bigger outer screen is entirely covered with a piece of glass. This means the color you pick for the phone can only be seen on the other half. It's an interesting design choice that makes the Galaxy Z Flip 5 look a lot different from its predecessor. Here's a side-by-side comparison to give you a better understanding of the updated design.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 also folds completely flat, leaving no gap between the display when folded. The overall fit-and-finish of the phone, however, remains largely the same, so you're not going to notice a huge difference in form factor or the dimensions as such. The camera sensors on the outside are now aligned horizontally to make room for the bigger outer display, but the sensors themselves haven't changed.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features Gorilla Glass Victus 2 panels for protection, along with an armored aluminum frame for added rigidity. It carries the same IPX8 water resistance rating as its predecessor, though.
Display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 sports a 3.4-inch OLED panel on the front which supports 720x748 pixel resolution and up to 60Hz refresh rate. This is a significant step up from the Galaxy Z Flip 4's 1.9-inch panel on the outside. The bigger outer screen will now allow you to do a lot more things without having to unfold all the time. It's still not as big as the outer display on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, so you'll often find yourself unfolding and reaching out for the 6.7-inch main screen. It's a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with support for up to 120Hz refresh rate and 2640x1080 resolution.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5's outer screen is a tad smaller than the 3.6-inch cover screen of the Moto Razr+. The Flip 5's cover screen also tops out at a 60Hz refresh rate, while the Moto Razr+ has a 120Hz screen. We'll have more to talk about the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and how it fares against the Moto Razr+ soon, so stay tuned.
Internal hardware and software
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, which is the same as the one powering Samsung's Galaxy S23 series phones. You get to pick between 256GB and 512GB storage variants, but they both top out with 8GB RAM. It's worth mentioning that there's no support for storage expansion via a microSD card slot, so you might want to pick the 512GB variant if you're a power user.
As far as the battery is concerned, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 packs a 3,700 mAh unit which tops out at the same 25W wired charging speeds as its predecessor. You get support for both wireless and reverse wireless charging, though. Some other noteworthy features of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, support for 5G, and Wi-Fi 6E. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 also ships with One UI 5.1.1 software that's based on Android 13. The company is yet to disclose the details of software support, but it's expected to be on par with its other high-end flagships, which is a full four years of major operating system updates and plus five years of security updates.
Cameras
The Galaxy Z Flip 5, in case you're wondering, sports the same set of cameras as its predecessor. You are essentially looking at a 12MP sensor for the main, wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 aperture and 83-degree field-of-view. The secondary camera also uses a 12MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 123-degree field-of-view. The selfies are handled by a 10MP shooter with an f/2.2 aperture. We'll have more to talk about the cameras and share some samples in our review, so stay tuned for that.
Samsung's clamshell foldable is better than ever
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with plenty of improvements and is shaping up to be solid over the outgoing model. It doesn't seem to move the needle in the clamshell foldable space, but Samsung has done just enough to position it as a solid contender to the growing competition out there. Whether it's worth considering over the Moto Razr+ is something that remains to be seen, but it definitely looks like a better pick than the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The fact that Samsung managed to retain the same $1,000 starting price for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also quite commendable.
