Samsung is kicking off the 2024 smartphone release cycle with its Galaxy S24 lineup. The company has once again released three new phones in the Galaxy S series — the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. These new Galaxy phones are now up for pre-order, and you can reserve your unit to be among the first to snag one of the new phones.

Neither of these phones look drastically different from the Galaxy S23 series phones that we already have on the market, but there's more to these upgraded models than just the exterior design. Samsung has made several improvements to these phones to deliver a slightly different and a better experience overall, but many of those subtle changes may fly under your radar, especially if you're not paying attention to all the details.

Best cases for Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

The Galaxy S24 Ultra looks exactly the same as its predecessor, but you can make it look different and exciting with a case.

Samsung's new Galaxy S24 series will be available starting January 31, 2024, but you can pre-order them starting today, January 17, 2024, to be among the first to grab a unit. The new phones will be available at Samsung.com, at Samsung Experience stores, and all the major carriers and retailers in the United States. As far as the pricing is concerned, the regular Galaxy S24 starts at $800 for the base variant with 128GB of storage. The Galaxy S24+ and the Galaxy S24 Ultra models start at $1,000 and $1,200, respectively, for their base variants that come with 256GB storage.

Those who pre-order ones of these new Galaxy S24 series phones are eligible for a free storage upgrade. That, for the first time ever, also includes the 512GB Galaxy S24 Ultra model, meaning those who grab it are eligible to get the 1TB variant at no additional cost. Notably, those who pre-order and purchase one of these phones from Samsung.com are also eligible to receive a $100 Samsung credit.

The Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ will be available in Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow colors, whereas the Galaxy S24 Ultra comes in Titanium Gray, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow. Samsung, as always, will have some exclusive colors for those who choose to pick the Galaxy S24 series from Samsung.com. Those include Titanium Blue, Titanium Green, and Titanium Orange for the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Jade Green, Sapphire Blue, and Sandstone Orange for the other two models.

Design & display

More of the same

All three phones in the series, i.e., the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra, look pretty much identical to their predecessors from last year. These phones have all looked pretty much the same over the last few years, and Samsung hasn't changed much this year, either. Unless you're looking at the new color options, you'll have a tough time telling them apart from the outside.

A quick look at the specification will reveal that the regular Galaxy S24 and the Plus model have slightly different dimensions. They're a hair taller than the existing models, which you'll only notice when you hold both the new and the old phones side-by-side. There's a good chance the existing Galaxy S23 series cases will fit the new models, but it is recommended that you pick new ones from our collection of the best Galaxy S24 cases to ensure you get a snug fit.

You'll need new cases for the Galaxy S24 Ultra as well, as it now has an entirely flat panel on the front, which is likely to change the way it feels in hand compared to the outgoing model. The Galaxy S24 Ultra also comes with a titanium frame now, whereas the regular and the Plus models continue to have the "armored aluminum frame." Not much has changed on the exterior, and you still get the signature Samsung Galaxy design with separate camera lens modules along with Samsung branding at the back.

The Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ sport 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch panels on the front, respectively, which are again a hair taller than the displays on their predecessors. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, however, retains the same display size, but it now has an entirely flat panel as opposed to a curved one as mentioned previously. All three phones now come with an LTPO display with refresh rates that can vary between 1Hz to 120Hz. This is a welcome change as only the Ultra models used to have an LTPO panel.

All three phones in the Galaxy S24 series will come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset in the U.S. market. But in other regions, including Europe, only the Galaxy S24 Ultra model will see the new Snapdragon, while the regular Galaxy S24 and the Plus model will come with the company's in-house Exynos 2400 chip. The regular Galaxy S24 is once again getting the short end of the stick when it comes to specifications. Not only does it start with 128GB of storage as opposed to 256GB like the other two variants, it still only charges at 25W. The Galaxy S24+ and the Galaxy S24 Ultra models charge at 45W, meaning Samsung is once again making you settle for less if you go with the smaller phone. It also houses the smallest battery out of the bunch, coming in at just 4,000mAh, compared to 4,900mAh and a 5,000mAh unit in the larger phones.

Besides the Galaxy S24 Ultra getting Wi-Fi 7 and an S Pen stylus, we're looking at similar specs across the board. All three phones support all the modern connectivity standards like mmWave, and they also come with must-have features like IP68 water resistance, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, and more.

Software

Galaxy AI is here

The Samsung Galaxy phones consistently deliver a good software experience, and the new Galaxy S24 series devices are expected to be no different. All three phones in the series will ship with One UI 6.1 out of the box that's based on Android 14. In addition to the usual set of One UI features, Samsung has sprinkled the software on these phones with a bunch of artificial intelligence features. The company is calling it "Galaxy AI," and it has a bunch of neat features up its sleeves.

Samsung Galaxy S24 users can use the Galaxy AI for things like real-time on-device translation and interpretation, photo search and editing, and more. You can even use read or write words, a feature that's going to be particularly useful for those who aren't confident in their reading or writing abilities. Samsung has added a "Browser Assist" feature to its native web browser, which can summarize an article like this or some other written content into bullet points. My colleague Ben talked more about these Galaxy AI features in his Galaxy S24 series hands-on post, and said they seem to work well.

Samsung's Galaxy S24 lineup is also supercharged with Google's Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI. The Galaxy S24 features can take advantage of the summarization features on Samsung's native apps like Notes, Voice-recorder, and Keyboard. Gemini Pro on Vertex AI provides Samsung with critical Google Cloud features, including security, safety, privacy, and data compliance. Notably, Galaxy S24 users will also benefit from Imagen 2, which is Google's most advanced text-to-image diffusion technology. Samsung will use it to deliver safe and intuitive photo-editing capabilities to its Galaxy S24 users.

Lastly, it's worth noting that the Galaxy S24 lineup will receive four major Android updates and five years of security updates. That's in line with the Galaxy S23 and most other major Android phones on the market, and it should help keep the Galaxy S24 series phones relevant on the market for a long time.

Cameras

The Ultra models continue to evolve

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra-17 Credit: Galaxy S24 Ultra

As far as the optics are concerned, both the regular Galaxy S24 and the Plus model retain the same camera hardware as their Galaxy S23 counterparts. That means, you are looking at the same 50MP main, 10MP telephoto, and 12MP ultrawide cameras on the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+. Both phones also have the same 12MP front-facing selfie camera, so no differences there either. The Galaxy S24 Ultra model, on the other hand, gets a new 50MP Periscope zoom lens with a 5X optical zoom range.

The Ultra model essentially has a new Periscope sensor with five times more pixels, which will result in superior image quality. The 200MP main camera also uses a new image sensor, so the overall output from the Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to be even better this year. We'll have more to talk about the Galaxy S24 series cameras shortly once we get more familiar with the optics, so stay tuned.

Closing thoughts

Samsung seems to have put more effort in improving the software experience for the new Galaxy S24 series instead of making too many radical changes to the hardware. The new phones don't look very different from the existing ones, nor do they bring anything significantly new to the table in terms of the internal. There are some minor improvements across the board that'll help you get a better experience overall, but it remains to be seen how the new phones stack up against the existing ones.

We'll have a more measured take on these phones shortly after we spend some time with them. If you like the changes on the specification sheet, in the meantime, then feel free to pre-order your unit now and grab the exciting offers to save some money on your purchase.
