OnePlus is a little late to the party, but it's finally gearing up to jump on the foldable phone bandwagon. The company recently confirmed that it's working on at least one new foldable phone, which it plans to launch sometime this year. OnePlus hasn't shared any details about this officially, but there is a lot that we already know about it, thanks to all the leaks and rumors. If you're excited for what's to come, read on to learn all the details we have on OnePlus' flagship foldable so far.

OnePlus Open: Rumored release date and availability

The OnePlus foldable was unofficially referred to as the OnePlus V Fold or the OnePlus Fold until recently. That, however, changed when the notable leaker Max Jambor claimed the device would be called the OnePlus Open. This particular name was also spotted in an EUIPO filing earlier this year, and it was also used by OnePlus to tease its foldable while Samsung was busy unveiling its Galaxy foldables in Seoul, South Korea.

This particular foldable phone was expected to enter the market last month, but it was seemingly delayed citing some production and quality control issues. OnePlus was then rumored to debut the phone this month, but it looks like it's now slated to arrive sometime in next month. Another leak from Max says we'll see the phone on October 19th, but there's no official confirmation on that just yet. Unlike the Find N2, which is limited to the Chinese market, OnePlus will likely release the foldable in all international markets. Since the company has solidified its presence in the U.S. over the last few years, we expect the OnePlus Open to make its way stateside.

OnePlus Open: Pricing

It's too early to say what price point OnePlus plans to target with its flagship foldable, but it'll certainly be much more expensive than the OnePlus 11, which was targeting a midrange market anyway. Some speculate that the OnePlus Open could cost about the same as Oppo's second-gen foldable, the Find N2, which retails for CNY 7,999 (~$1,150). That's because OnePlus has a history of repurposing Oppo's smartphones with minor design and hardware changes, but the company might take a different approach this time around if recent leaks are to be believed.

According to noted leaker Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus Open could have less in common with the Find N2, with a large foldable screen with a 2K resolution, which is a bit more premium than the 1792x1920 panel on Oppo's flagship foldable. As a result, the OnePlus Open could be a bit more expensive. But we don't expect the phone to be in the same price range as Samsung's Z Fold flagship, so it could cost between $1,200 and $1,800.

OnePlus Open: Design and specifications

We've seen a lot of concept images and leaked renders of the OnePlus Open in the past, but the latest ones from the reliable leaker OnLeaks give us our best look at the foldable yet. Here, take a look:

The render highlighted above makes the OnePlus Open look completely different from what we've previously seen. The source claims that these renders come from real images of the OnePlus Open in its current state. It shows a more pronounced camera module that takes up more than half of the OnePlus Open's back.

OnePlus is said to have made a lot of "adjustments to the phone's aspect ratio," and it looks a lot wider now. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up against the other book-style foldables on the market, so stay tuned. In the meantime, here are a few more renders of the phone:

The device might also feature the same hinge mechanism as the Find N2. OnePlus' CEO and co-founder Pete Lau has previously shared a cryptic tweet showcasing a hinge that resembles the one in Oppo's foldable.

OnePlus has remained tight-lipped about the hardware specifications, but rumors suggest that it'll feature a 7.8-inch 2K AMOLED display on the inside, with a relatively 6.3-inch AMOLED on the front. Notably, the phone is also said to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 along with 16GB of RAM. It's also said to pack a 4,800mAh battery with support for up to 67W charging.

OnePlus Open is also said to carry a triple camera setup at the back with a 48MP primary sensor, a 48MP ultrawide sensor, and a 64MP telephoto camera sensor. You can also expect to see a 32MP camera on the outer screen along with a 20MP camera on the folding screen for selfies.

OnePlus Open: Software

While we don't have all the details about the OnePlus Open's hardware, we're almost certain it'll run a nearly identical version of the software found on the Find N2. Since OnePlus has merged its OxygenOS code base with Oppo's ColorOS and OxygenOS 13 is a carbon copy of ColorOS 13, the software experience will likely be the same.

So you can expect to see a host of new multitasking gestures to perform tasks like opening split-screen views and launching apps quickly. There's no way to tell whether OnePlus will ship this phone with OxygenOS based on Android 14, but we hope to find out soon.

Final thoughts

That sums up all the leaks and teasers we have on the OnePlus Open so far. Based on all the information we have about the device, we can safely say it'll be among the best foldables this year. Now all we can do is wait for more details to surface in the coming weeks and months leading up to the launch to see how OnePlus manages to differentiate its flagship foldable from competitors. If you don't want to wait for the OnePlus foldable and you'd rather buy something right now, then we suggest checking out either the Pixel Fold or Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5.
