A common complaint in the Android community is phones that kill background apps prematurely to "optimize" battery life. Almost every OEM does this to a degree, some worse than others. Earlier this year, the Urbanandroid team created a website to track the worst offenders and Nokia was atop the list. HMD Global says they are fixing this.

The website (dontkillmyapp.com) was released in February and it put Nokia devices at the very top of the list. Since then, HMD Global has improved things slightly (or the competition has gotten worse) and they find themselves in the third spot now. The company was using app killing services from Evenwell, but they recently started disabling the service on devices that were upgraded to Android Pie.

HMD Global is finally going to completely disable Evenwell app killing services on all devices, including "legacy" devices. New Nokia phones won't launch with the software pre-installed at all. A staff member wrote a post to explain the decision to use Evenwell. Before Android Pie introduced Adaptive Battery, there wasn't a universal approach to manage system performance. They turned to Evenwell as the solution. The Adaptive Battery has made it so they don't need to rely on 3rd-party software anymore.

This is great news for anyone who was frustrated with Nokia's app killing. Google (who uses Adaptive Battery) is also listed on the Don't Kill My App website, but they are considered one of the best out there. This is a big upgrade for Nokia users.
