Google Duo has become the choice for video calling friends and family for many Android users. The app is simple, intuitive, and best of all comes preinstalled on every modern Android phone as part of Google Mobile Services. It has most of the bells and whistles you would expect from video calling apps, and it also packs additional perks such as the ability to send video messages, send notes, makes calls on the web, and more.

However, there's one thing that Google Duo doesn't support yet: making full HD (1080p) calls. If you have the bandwidth you can make video calls in HD (720p) quality, but you can’t go any higher than that. That's a bummer if you want to see your family members or friends in crisp FHD resolution and you have the bandwidth for it. However, it looks like this limitation doesn't apply to the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S20. In a press release earlier today, Samsung announced that Google Duo on the Galaxy S20 will support video calling in full HD quality over 5G. Samsung furthermore says they have integrated Google Duo right into the dialer and messaging apps so users don't even need to open the Duo app.

The press release reads:

With 5G, the Galaxy S20 enhances the video chatting experience through an exclusive, deep integration with Google Duo. Now, from the dialer, you can tap Duo to start a video call and enjoy, for the first time ever, full HD quality.

The only limitation of this feature is that the devices on both ends of the call must be connected to a 5G network. There won't be any user-facing setting within the app to enable the full HD quality, it seems. Google Duo will automatically switch to the highest quality available depending on your network conditions. It's unclear if the 1080p calling will be rolled out to other 5G phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G or Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. For now, at least, it appears the feature will be exclusive to the Galaxy S20 lineup.
