Android Auto might have lost its place in Google's priority list to Google Assistant's Driving Mode, but there are still plenty of users who remain committed to the Android Auto app. But even that commitment can get boring and drab sometimes—irrespective of the redesigned interface with the dark theme and simplified controls. If you are looking to try something new and different, you can now change the background wallpaper on Android Auto with Substratum AA Wallpaper—substratum themes.

Substratum AA Wallpaper, as the name would imply, lets you change the wallpapers on Android Auto through Substratum themes. You obviously require Substratum, and the theme can be installed on phones running Android 5.0 and above. Once installed, users have to use the Substratum Manager app to build the theme with the background of their choice from the pre-included options. These range from logos of car manufacturers, to GoT wallpapers, Marvel characters, and other wallpapers. The developer is open for suggestions on what to include next, so you can request something else if you would like.

Do note that users have reported that the theme does not work on Android 10, but works perfectly on Android 9 Pie. The issue is likely with conflicts between Substratum and Android 10 since this theme does not touch any system UI elements. But even then, this is a good heads up to have. Also, note that you cannot choose an image from your local storage -- you have to choose from the wallpapers included. But again, since there are about a hundred wallpapers, you'll likely find one better suited to your taste than the simple black background. A case can also be made on how the black background can be distracting when driving, but a case can also be made on how you shouldn't really take your eyes off the road anyway.
