Games like Skyrim or GTA love talk about open worlds, but it seems, that so far only Minecraft has truly embraced this principle. (…) This here is your story, that you simultaneously write and experience. All at your own pace.

Minecraft is a towering achievement in the very possibilities of gaming, and it does this without losing itself to either esoterica or cynicism. It is a game anyone can play and anyone can get something out of, no matter how skilled or imaginative they are. They will make something and they will have an experience that feels like theirs and theirs alone.

This game is a masterpiece. I've been playing it since my childhood. I simply can't say more than that this is the best game on planet Earth.

In the end, Minecraft is what you make of it, and that's the beauty of the game. Whether you want to spend hours at a time experimenting with digital Lego or playing a hack-and-slash version of Wolfenstein 3D, Mojang's unique achievement allows you to do either and more. While it still has some pixilated edges that leave it feeling unfinished, few games in recent years have done so well with such a promising concept and offered so many opportunities for true exploration.

Happiness and distraction; that's what gaming is all about really and it's something that Minecraft, for all its abstractions and division, delivers in spades. You can build cathedrals with your friends; create macro-scale machines on your own or simply drift, floating through impossible landscapes that can bend to your will - do anything you want! That alone gives Minecraft a little bit of magic.

A must-play title - as much a part of videogaming as it is anything else. [Issue#118, p.102]

Minecraft is a milestone in video game history and one of the most influential games ever made. At its core, it is a survival game set in a blocky, procedurally generated world, but it offers so much more than that. The world is practically endless and incredibly diverse, with countless biomes to explore and new places to discover. The gameplay itself runs smoothly and reliably, while the huge sandbox gives you almost unlimited freedom to build. There is virtually nothing you can't create if you are willing to put in the time and effort. The experience becomes even more enjoyable when playing in co-op or on online servers. These offer completely different ways to play, from simply building and surviving together to entirely new game modes and communities. This gives Minecraft an incredible amount of replayability and can easily keep you entertained for hundreds of hours. The game is also accompanied by some of the most iconic and memorable music in video game history. The soundtrack perfectly captures the feeling of exploring and building in this seemingly endless world, creating a unique atmosphere that I don't think many other games can replicate. Regular updates and new content have also helped Minecraft remain relevant for so many years, constantly giving players new reasons to return to the game. Overall, Minecraft is an absolute classic and a game everyone should experience at least once. Its incredible freedom, endless possibilities, and timeless charm have made it a true milestone in gaming history—and rightfully so.

I started playing Minecraft again after many years, and this time I actually wanted to beat the game (kind of). I started the way Minecraft is at its best: slowly. I built a house, made it comfortable, mined while listening to podcasts, created a farm, tamed animals, explored the world, and slowly but surely upgraded my equipment. Eventually, I had a full diamond set, a shield, and a whole loadout of enchanted gear. At this point I thought: "Alright, let’s beat the dragon." Then came the Nether. I needed Blaze Rods to progress, so I entered the Nether looking for a fortress. After hours of searching, it became less of an adventure and more of a punishment. Everything wanted to kill me, my armor was taking damage, and the fortress was nowhere to be found. Eventually, I gave up and added the Blaze Rods because I wasn’t interested in spending my entire day wandering through a dimension designed to annoy me. Then came the Ender Pearls. Slowly but surely, I hunted Endermen... but they barely dropped anything. Eventually, I added the pearls too and created the Eyes of Ender. Now it was time to find the Stronghold. And this is where Minecraft’s progression really started testing my patience. I followed the Eyes for hours. I mined down, up, sideways, across, and everywhere in between. I wasted all my Eyes of Ender, added more, wasted those too, and eventually started thinking: "Is this really how the game expects players to progress?" Hours later, I finally found the Stronghold. I went down, built a staircase, almost drowned, dug around, got confused by the maze-like layout, and spent even more time searching. Eventually, after another half hour, I finally found the End Portal. The End fight itself was actually pretty fun. I knew to destroy the towers first, but some crystals were protected and required extra work. After taking down the crystals and surviving a close call with the help **** apple, I slowly defeated the dragon. **** then? The Dragon Egg. A cool trophy, right? Except the game doesn’t explain how to collect it. I hit it, it teleported away, and I had to look up that you need a torch trick to pick it up. "Haha."Then I discovered the End Cities. More content! More exploration! Except it was more of the same: bring more equipment, bring more blocks, spend more time searching. At that point, I decided I was done. I returned, watched the credits, and expected some kind of satisfying conclusion. Instead, it was just... a poem. Minecraft is a legendary game. It is incredible for relaxing, building, exploring, and creating your own stories. The early and middle game are genuinely amazing. Making a home, improving your gear, discovering new places, and slowly becoming stronger is where Minecraft shines. However, the path to "beating" the game feels unfinished. The game gives you almost no guidance, and you are expected to use Google, wikis, or outside help for basic progression. After defeating the final boss, there is no real sense of becoming stronger or unlocking new abilities. No new powers. No special reward that makes you feel like you conquered something. Instead, you unlock more places that require even more preparation and grinding. For some players, that endless sandbox is the magic of Minecraft. For me, it became exhausting. Still, I understand why Minecraft is considered legendary. The freedom, creativity, and atmosphere are unmatched. But after finally beating the dragon, I realized I enjoyed living in Minecraft much more than completing Minecraft. A great game for relaxing and creating. A frustrating game if you try to follow the "main quest." Now it’s time to study.
