How to Disable Cortana in Windows 10

Last Updated : 10 Dec, 2025

Cortana is Microsoft’s built-in digital assistant designed to help users perform tasks using voice commands—such as setting reminders, searching the web, and managing productivity. However, due to low usage, privacy concerns, and performance issues, many Windows 10 users now prefer to disable or remove it entirely.

Here are the main reasons users disable Cortana:

  • High Resource Usage: Runs constantly in the background, consuming RAM and CPU.
  • Privacy Concerns: Collects data for personalized recommendations.
  • User Preference: Some prefer other assistants or none at all.
  • Low Usefulness: Inconsistent voice recognition and inaccurate responses.

Why Cortana Failed

Cortana never achieved the popularity Microsoft expected. Key reasons include:

  • Strong competition from Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant
  • Outdated and limited user interface
  • Poor marketing and slow updates
  • High memory usage that slowed down older systems

By 2023, Microsoft ended support for Cortana as a standalone Windows app.
