Structure of the PYP (Primary Year Program )

Structure of PYP Program includes Action and exhibition, Six subjects, Six Transdisciplinary Themes. It uses concepts and different approaches to teaching students. Let's discuss PYP program structure in detail -

1. Action and Exhibition


In the PYP, action is seen as to be both an application of knowledge and an opportunity for students to participate in a form of contribution or service to the community. The PYP exhibition is an event and a opportunity students to share their understanding of a real-life issue and showcase topic they've covered by taking action.

2. Subjects

PYP curriculum cover six subjects: 

  • language
  • social studies
  • mathematics
  • arts
  • science
  • personal/social/physical education

3. The Six Transdisciplinary Themes

Here are the 6 themes and what they mean in PYP :

Who we are?
This theme focuses on exploring into the self nature, understanding beliefs, spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures, rights and responsibilities it means to be human.

Where we are in place and time ?
This subject focuses on asking questions about personal histories, homes and travels, orientation in space and time, human migrations and discoveries, and the connections and relationships between people and civilizations from both local and global viewpoints.

How we express ourselves ?
Investigation of how we come across and convey concepts, emotions, nature, culture, beliefs, and values; how we consider, develop, and enjoy our creative abilities; how we appreciate aesthetics.

How the world works ?
Investigation into the laws of nature, the relationship between the physical and biological natural world and human societies, the application of scientific understanding by individuals, and the effects of scientific and technical advancements on society and the environment.

How we organize ourselves ?
Investigation of the relationships between communities and human-made systems; the composition and operation of organizations; the process of making decisions in society; and the effects of economic activity on both the environment and people.

Sharing the planet
Investigation of rights and responsibilities in the fight to share limited resources with other humans and living things; communities and the dynamics within and between them; equal access to opportunities; and the promotion of peace and the resolution of conflicts.

4. International Mindedness

A international minded student has the capability of standing out with their decision making, Understanding how the decision on is going to impacts others  and with appreciation for other people's ideas, feelings and perspectives.

How do Assessments Work in PYP (Primary Year Program ) ?

In PYP teachers asses students on the basis of what they have learned with help of formative and summative assessments:

  • Summative Assessments: Summative assessments are only taken once throughout the unit. this assessment ids taken at the very end of the unit. the evaluation is based on the rubrics which are out of 8 marks . summative assessments can include presentations, performances, projects and written assessments.
  • Formative Assessments: These are on going assessments that take place throughout the learning process. It helps teachers understand the strengths and areas of improvement. Formative assessments can include observations, discussions, student self assessment and peer feedback.
