The digital SAT exam lasts for a total of 2 hours and 14 minutes, excluding breaks. It consists of two main sections:
- Reading and Writing: This section is 64 minutes long, with 54 questions, giving you about 1 minute and 11 seconds per question.
- Math: Spanning 70 minutes, the Math section includes 44 questions, allowing roughly 1 minute and 35 seconds per question.
Understanding the SAT timing and structure is crucial for time management and maximizing your score. The digital SAT provides 67% more time per question compared to the ACT®, making it an important factor when choosing between tests. The SAT also features two equal-length modules for each section, with a 10-minute break between Reading and Writing and Math.

Due to the adaptive nature of the digital SAT, it can efficiently and accurately measure the same knowledge and skills in a shorter time frame. The first module of each section includes a variety of easy, medium, and hard questions. Your performance on the first module determines the difficulty level of the second module, which will either be more challenging or less challenging. Regardless of the difficulty, the second module will always contain the same number of questions.
