Set Up a Self-Running PowerPoint Presentation

A self-running presentation advances automatically without requiring mouse clicks. It is ideal for trade shows, kiosks, lobbies, or when you want to send a presentation that plays on its own.

Method 1: Set Automatic Slide Timings

Step 1: Go to the Transitions tab.

Step 2: In the Timing group:

  • Uncheck On Mouse Click.

  • Check After and enter the number of seconds each slide should display (for example, 00:05.00 for 5 seconds).

Step 3: Click Apply To All if you want the same timing on every slide.(You can also set different timings for individual slides.)

Step 1: Go to the Slide Show tab → click Rehearse Timings.

Step 2: The presentation starts in full-screen mode with a recording toolbar.

Step 3: Advance through each slide at the pace you want (click or press the arrow keys).

Step 4: When you finish, PowerPoint asks if you want to save the timings. Click Yes.

The recorded timings are now saved with the presentation.

Method 3: Configure the Slide Show Settings

Step 1: Go to the Slide Show tab click on Set Up Slide Show.

Step 2: Under Show type, choose one of the following:

  • Presented by a speaker (full screen): Normal mode (manual control).

  • Browsed by an individual (window): Runs in a window; viewer has some control.

  • Browsed at a kiosk (full screen): Full-screen, automatic, and loops continuously until the viewer presses Esc.

Note: (Optional) Check Loop continuously until ‘Esc’ for continuous playback.

Step 3: Click OK.

Kiosk mode is the best choice for unattended displays.
