Tooltips in Power BI provide extra context when users hover over a visual. Beyond the default summary you can use a Report Page as a tooltip to show detailed visuals making your reports more interactive and insightful. A Report Page tooltip is like a mini-report within your Power BI file.
How to Set Up a Report Page Tooltip
Follow these steps to create a dynamic tooltip page:
Step 1: Add a main visual
- In Power BI Desktop, add a main visual to the report canvas.

Step 2: Create a New Page
- Add a new page to your report and rename it with a descriptive name.
Step 3: Configure the Page as a Tooltip
- Click anywhere on the page to access Page Information.
- Change Page Type from Standard to Tooltip.

- The page automatically resizes to a smaller window optimized for tooltip display.

Step 4: Design the Tooltip Content
- Add the visual you want to display such as a bar chart showing revenue by category.
- Ensure the visual uses the same data context as the main report visual that will trigger the tooltip.
Linking the Tooltip to a Main Visual
Once your tooltip page is ready connect it to a visual in your report:
1. Add a visual to the tooltip page and define the X-axis and Y-axis with the required data.

2. Go to another report page containing the main visual.

Hover over the main visual to view the tooltip output with detailed insights displayed in the smaller window.
Customizing Report Page Tooltips
1. Apply Filters: Show only the most relevant data such as the top 3 categories by revenue.

2. Hide the Tooltip Page: To keep your report clean hide the tooltip page from navigation. Users can still interact with the tooltip without seeing the page itself.
