Why Infinity Is Not a Number

Infinity is not a number; it is a mathematical concept that describes something without any limit. A number has a fixed and measurable value, whereas infinity has no definite value. It cannot be counted, measured, or treated as a real number.

Infinity is represented by the symbol ∞ and expresses the idea of endlessness rather than a specific numerical quantity.

Properties of Infinity

If any finite number is added to infinity, the result remains infinity.

• −∞ + (−∞) = −∞
• x + ∞ = ∞
• x + (−∞) = −∞

2. Multiplication Property

When a finite number is multiplied by infinity, the result depends on the sign of the number.

• ∞ × ∞ = ∞
• −∞ × ∞ = −∞
• −∞ × (−∞) = ∞

For a real number x:

If x > 0

  • x × ∞ = ∞
  • x × (−∞) = −∞

If x < 0

  • x × ∞ = −∞
  • x × (−∞) = ∞

Big Numbers

Mathematics defines some extremely large numbers that can be written precisely:

Googol: It is a number 1 followed by one hundred zeros (10100)

Googolplex: It is a number 1 followed by a googol of zeros (10 googol). It is a very large number, and some might consider it the largest number.

However, a googolplex is not the biggest number. Even larger numbers, such as Graham’s Number, have been defined. In fact, there is no largest number because numbers continue without limit.

Examples of Concept of Infinity

Example 1: Suppose we divide 2/3 and get the answer in decimals. Then the answer to this is 0.6666... and the six after the decimal goes on forever. In that case, we say that there are infinite 6 after the decimal in the division of 2/3

Example 2: If we take a number line and observe it, then we can say that numbers on both sides of the number line go on forever, and this means they also stretch to infinity.

Example 3: We say that two parallel lines never meet each other, or they meet at infinity.
