In 2022, I found myself at a crossroads, faced with an opportunity that could shape my career—the HCL Tech Bee program. The program promised one year of training, an on-the-job opportunity at HCL, and the chance to pursue higher education through EAPCET counseling. It seemed perfect, except for one major hurdle: the eligibility criteria required a minimum of 60% in MPC (Maths, Physics, and Chemistry).
The Challenge of Eligibility
Due to the pandemic (2020–2022), our first-year intermediate exams were canceled, and students were given passing marks. To improve scores, students could attempt a "betterment" exam, but I contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized, leaving me with borderline results—just 57% in MPC. My low marks in Mathematics were particularly disappointing.
When I shared my decision to apply for the program with my parents, they were furious.
"How could you end up with just 57%? You were such a bright student in school!"
Their disappointment weighed heavily on me, and the situation felt like a matter of life and death. Despite their anger and my own doubts, I decided to take a chance.
The Exam
The first step in the application process was a qualifying exam. On test day, I gave it my all and felt confident about my performance. An examiner even reassured me: "If you pass, you’ll receive an email for an interview."
Days passed, but no email arrived. My parents’ frustration grew.
"You weren’t even eligible to begin with. Why did you even try?"
Their words stung deeply, and I began to doubt myself. One night, overwhelmed with emotions, I broke down, thinking maybe my 57% was the reason for my failures.
Out of desperation, I checked my email again. To my shock, I realized I had missed my interview invite! My heart sank—it felt like the end of the road.
The Call That Changed Everything
Determined not to give up, I nervously called the examiner, explaining my mistake.
"I missed the interview invite in my email. Is there any chance I can still attend?"
After a pause, the examiner said,
"Let me see what I can do. I’ll reschedule it for you, but this is your last chance. Don’t mess it up."
I couldn’t believe my luck. I thanked him profusely and promised to make the most of this opportunity.
The Interview
On the interview day, I double-checked everything to ensure no mistakes. The call began with the interviewer asking:
"Tell us a little about yourself."
I shared my story—my schooling, struggles during the pandemic, and aspirations.
"What do you want to be in the future?"
I want to work in tech, creating solutions that can help people in their everyday lives through HCL," I replied.
The next question caught me off guard:
"What’s your favorite book?"
I smiled and said, "Harry Potter."
The interviewer responded, "Great choice! Now, open a notebook and write 100 words about the book. We’ll be watching."
The pressure was intense, but I stayed calm, writing with focus and clarity. After submitting my work, the examiner said:
"You have an incredible way with words. Your confidence and fluent English are remarkable."
I was stunned and proud.
The Selection
Two days later, I received the news—I had been selected! My parents, though initially frustrated, were now ecstatic.
We were invited to the HCL headquarters in Vijayawada to discuss the curriculum:
- Six months of online training followed by six months of offline training.
- A fee of ₹1 lakh for the program, which included laptops for the course.
Despite the cost, I was thrilled to embark on this new journey.
A Twist of Fate
Just two days after the visit to Vijayawada, my EAPCET counseling results were announced. To my delight, I secured a CSE seat at ANITS, a prestigious college in Visakhapatnam.
After careful consideration, I chose to prioritize my studies over the HCL Tech Bee program.
When I informed the examiner of my decision, he expressed disappointment:
"I had great expectations for you. You should have informed me sooner."
Hearing his words, I felt a pang of regret for leaving the program after all the effort.
Reflection
Looking back, my experience with the HCL Tech Bee program taught me the importance of perseverance, self-confidence, and taking chances—even when the odds aren’t in your favor.
Though I ultimately chose a different path, the journey remains a pivotal moment in my life. It reminded me that setbacks are not the end but opportunities to grow stronger.
To anyone facing challenges, remember: take the chance, believe in yourself, and never give up. You never know how far it might take you.
