  • Residual bodies from undigested materials may also be found inside.

Lysosomes Function

Some of the most important functions of lysosomes are;

  • Digesting various biomolecules like proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, etc.
  • Digesting and removing cellular waste like unwanted material, damaged cellular components, proteins, etc.
  • Helps in maintaining cellular homeostasis by digesting damaged cellular and cytoplasmic components of the cell.
  • Helps in the programmed cell death of cell (apoptosis) by releasing the hydrolytic enzyme in the cell.
  • Helps in the digestion and removal of foreign pathogens or pathogenic components to maintain cellular health.
  • Recycling old and damaged components by breaking them down to be used for the formation of new components.

Types of Lysosomes

There are mainly four types of lysosomes, which are;

  1. Primary Lysosomes: Newly formed lysosomes with inactive enzymes.
  2. Secondary Lysosomes: Lysosomes contain active enzymes and materials for digestion.
  3. Autolysosomes: Lysosomes combined with autophagosomes to digest damaged cellular components.
  4. Residual Bodies: Lysosomes suffering from disorders leave some residual bodies with undigested materials due to incomplete digestion.
